Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

Great yet ?

Isnt Vegas a conservative shit hole? As a Canadian fuck off. I saw that bald maga prick from pawn stars complaining about the lack of tourism, well you voted for this shit

[–] DNS@discuss.online 14 points 3 days ago

Yes, it's a conservative shithole. Pretty much all of Nevada is. I noticed when I went to work conferences there that there seemed to be more conservative events happening compared to how it was 15 years ago.

Vegas effectively priced out middle class/poor families out of a budget friendly vacation. Now it's just rich people, poor people acting rich, and employees attending conferences now. As an American minority, Vegas isn't a safe place to visit anymore. They want my money but not see me there.

Aw gee, that sounds like a really specific problem that would have really specific cause and solution, I wonder what it could be.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago

Just hold on a bit longer. Trump is desperately trying to turn his shit deals into art.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 39 points 3 days ago

Why would I want to visit any city in that fascist shit hole when there is an entire world of free countries to visit.

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago

Too bad MAGAts have chased away people from entering this country.

I’ll stay in my genetically diverse country of Canada and if I feel like it, I’ll visit any one of the many casinos we have here and keep my money in the greatest nation on earth.

I like people of colour, ethnic origins and choice of religion or lack there of, and honestly, I enjoy feeling safe amongst my brethren and not worrying if myself or my neighbour will be pulled out of their bed because they were born the wrong skin tone or race and sent off to a desolate jail in another country not of their own.

America the fascist can rot and I’m enjoying watching it start to implode.

I feel sorry for the good Americans caught up in this, but you have a line item in your constitution to fight this sort of thing. It’s up to you all to choose what you do with that.

From what I've been reading here, sounds a lot that they activelly brought in multiple leopards: an anti-foreigner out of control Fascist regime and very high prices.

That's like commiting suicide with both barrels of a two barrel shotgun.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 35 points 3 days ago (1 children)

you guys are having a nation-wide hunt for people who aren't mourning a neo-nazi supporting piece of shit the way you want them to, and trying to ruin their lives.

I'm gonna stay away, thanks. finish taking out the trash first

This will drag down the entire state of Nevada.

If the strip is so desperate for business, then where are the $35/night rooms?

Was going to go with the girlfriend last month, but after seeing the room prices, we decided to save a ton of money and go to San Diego instead.

If you want people to go to the strip again, bring back the deals you used to run all the time before COVID. Otherwise I don't believe you when you say you're desperate for tourists.

Taking a step away from the reasons this is happening, perhaps it's not a good idea to have a place that's so dependent on tourism money. Cities should be city first, travel destination second.

Las Vegas isn't and never was a proper city. It's just a giant sprawling suburb propping up a thin line of decaying skyscrapers in the desert.

Noviello's death marks the eighth known immigrant detainee deaths this year.

There's a non-zero chance the American government will find you and kill you.

This video answers the "why" perfectly.

tl;dw: everything more expensive, bullshit fees, less quality

Also, in my personal opinion, the current political climate doesn't help to draw in international tourists.

Hey, try this instead:

"We have an armed response force ready to protect you against ICE if they come to try to snatch you. We have lawyers at the ready, and we're fine mobilizing the state's National Guard if it comes to that. If you're in another part of the country and worried about your safety, come to Vegas! You can do some gambling and see the sights without worrying if you're going to make it home to your family or not."

Guaranteed spike in tourism. Don't just ask for what you want. Earn it.

Me I will never come to the states ever again in my life. The states are now a fascist country.

We don’t love you, we don’t need anything from you. Go kiss your fascist child rapists ring, you got what you voted for.

Piss off.

I do feel sorry for individual Americans who will lose their jobs, maybe their homes, maybe more. However, we saw what Russia has done to the Ukraine and we have to be just as wary about our Southern neighbour. We've always known that America is a good-weather friend and we can't count on them, even if they have always been able to count on us, but with Trump we have to believe that America would go even further and try to destroy us. We can't sit back and take that. Until Trump and his acolytes are out of power in the US - and that may never happen - we have to Stand On Guard for Thee (Canada). That means as little US vacation and as limited buying of US merchandise as we can individually manage.

How much of it is Canadians staying away because of fascism, or how much of it is staying away because Vegas is too goddamn expensive?

The city and casinos sold their soul for profits and the country turned evil. Get fucked Vegas.

She's Democrat, so not really LAMF. I feel sorry for relatively sane people getting caught up in all this. Fuck the whole MAGA madhouse with a rusty spade.

That said, I just don't see what she thought she could have achieved with that. Maybe its target audience was her own consituency more than actual Canadians.
