A very dear friend of mine reccomended that I check the site out back in '21 but it wasnt until last year did I start going on here regularly. They would send me posts from here fairly frequently and in retrospect I think they were trying to nudge me in a better direction once I started to drift towards the NAFO nonsense in '22.
Im glad they showed me this place. I think its been a positive influence.
Ran into a reading list hosted here linked to on commie Reddit, poster apologized for Hexbear link because "I hear they're a bunch of tankies", and, well, a bunch of tankies sounded like my kinda comrades, so I poked around the site a bit and signed up. Stuck around because it's a genuinely fun place.

i was also a r/cth user but may have been a lurker because at some point i got banned from reddit and i stopped bothering making accounts
I found r/stupidpol and I was like “wow this place is absolutely horrible” and went looking around to see if there was any place online talking about how bad r/stupidpol was and I found a thread on here
Back in my teens I was a self professed tankie (I'm closer to an anarchocommunist nowadays but I still get called a tankie a lot by clueless libs), saw people on Reddit complaining that r/chapotraphouse was fulla tankies, got excited about finding a forum for people with similar political views, looked inside, it was mostly Bernie Sanders stans or whatever. Still, I hung around 'cos it was the least cringe part of Reddit. Saw those libs get radicalised in real time.
My account got nuked for some reason around the time the subreddit was.
Around the time the Chapochat launched I saw a Reddit post warning libs that the spectre of chapo still haunted the internet, so I went to have a look-see.

I stumbled upon a mention of chapo.chat as a successor to r/chapotraphouse probably from a trans comrade on twitter, but I don't remember where I first found the mention.
for me it was word of mouth from my roommate forever ago

From /chapotraphouse cuz it was the best forum on the internet and then it was banned. I made an account immediately but after a year or two forgot the password (and also not to offend anyone but this site wasn’t that great until the last few years 😬) but then came back and nothing is better, as in nothing on the internet is better than this site
first knew about lemmygrad in 2022 when r/genzedong got quarantined, lurked forawhile checking that site every so often, found out about HB when second thought did an AMA here in late 2022, finally made an account on grad and hexbear early in 2023 a month or 2 before the big reddit API migration
fun fact, lemmy used to use websockets so it was like a weird mix of traditional forum software and a messenger in that you would see new comments and votes coming in even without refreshing the page, notifications too actually, i remember being drunk while using grad/hexbear and getting jumpscared because someone would send me a huge response to some huge paragraph i had typed earlier and the notification would pop up and take over like half my screen lol

I was looking for a pirate feed of a podcast and there was a reddit thread that linked to a post on Hexbear listing a bunch of them.
Another old who got banned along with the cth sub back in the day reporting in 
Oldhead as well. Originally found cth when curiosity got the best of me and I checked if there was a proudboys sub, and there was, but it was satire and most of the posters also posted on cth, and that's how I found it
I found out about Lemmygrad after r/GenZedong got quarantined, and then people there mentioned Hexbear. That was before federation mind you, so I mostly lurked and posted on Lemmygrad. Then with federation, the funny began.

lol came from sh.itjust too! i'd run from reddit along with many others during the api exodus and read thru a few tear-filled threads on the bear and i needed to see what got everyone so twisted up.
Hopped on a trolley and came on down after Mr Chapo was banned
