'It's okay though. The guy who got murdered talked his band mate into suicide and took pictures of his body to put on an album cover so he was kind of an asshole

Didn't he make a cereal bowl out of a chunk of his skull? Or am I combining the real life events with something fictional that was referencing it?

[–] potato_wallrus@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

No, he did keep skull fragments and made necklaces out of them. You're probably thinking of Ed Gein

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago

Ah right that was it.

[–] masinko@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

He claimed to have made stew from his brain, but turns out that was bs and he never did, he was trying to sound like an edgelord.

[–] potato_wallrus@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Really the only normal one in that band is necrobutcher.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I imagine the phrase 'please guys I just want to make music' came from his mouth a few times.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 128 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I enjoy black metal, I enjoy much less having to become a freelance investigative journalist each time I find a new band that sounds cool

[–] potato_wallrus@lemmy.world 90 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Man, this bands really good, let me just look then up real qui....aaannd theres the swastikas"

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 64 points 1 week ago (2 children)

"Do they hate all of humanity or just specific colours of humanity? Please be the first one"

I'm cool with blanket misanthropy but take issue when they get specific...I fucking love Black Metal though so it's tough.

[–] potato_wallrus@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Please be just the first one....

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

just listen to hipster NY bands like Krallice and Imperial Triumphant.

I say this as an obvious Colin Marston fan.

[–] UniversalBasicJustice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Marston fan

Doesn't mention Dysrythmia

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)
  1. My name is Skullgrid, I think behold is more obscure and less accessible than Dysrhythmia

  2. It's implicit based on the context that I am saying that Krallice is a Hipster NY Black Metal band, and Dysrhythmia is not one (despite all the double picking on Psychic Maps)

[–] UniversalBasicJustice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Hehehe I'm just picking nits and stanning for Marston as well. Remember me from our recent conversation?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh shit it's you! Yeah, I'm still meaning to hit you up with a few things and I owe you a reply , but life is hard. 🙃

No sweat my dude, shit's tough all around. Feel free to shoot me a DM or figure out the appropriate public forum to continue our discussion lol.

life is hard

Good luck, stay safe, Hail Satan 🤘

And remember; Failure is not an option.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just don't even look into it most of the time. I just don't have the energy. If it's obvious, then I drop them. Otherwise, I'll just enjoy the music and stay ignorant

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 hours ago

just don't buy their things and it doesn't matter anyways, view counts on youtube aren't going to benefit them noticably

[–] leraje@piefed.blahaj.zone 54 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Wawe@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would love to see similar lists of other genres.

[–] leraje@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

ABMN is not just Black Metal, their YT channel (findable on Invidious too) is divided in to playlists by subgenre.

SNH also a huge mix of sub-genres and non-metal genres such as EDM, Noise, punk etc.

In terms of non-metal, there are similar projects for neofolk (which also has a tendency to attract the fash), the LeftFolk collective features some great music. The Riihimaki Collective feature hardcore, and DIY Conspiracy are a punk collective.

[–] Wawe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Thank for sharing! Didn't realize there was playlists for splitting genres! I lean toward symphonic and nu metal and noticed there are few that match that genre!

[–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago

And said bassist is a white supremacist terrorist.

[–] burgerchurgarr@lemmus.org 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I‘m really drunk so are you saying black metal people are expected to be Nazis? That honestly sucks ass

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 18 points 1 week ago

There is definitely plenty of non-Nazi black metal. It's just that there's also a lot of actual Nazi BM, including some of the foundational figures of the genre. The general themes of the genre being very misanthropic and usually interested in the various kinds of paganism that Nazis cribbed a bunch of their symbolism from can also make it difficult to spot the Nazis at a glance if they're not being overt about it

[–] potato_wallrus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Nah, the scene does have a nazi problem tho

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Black metal is, in my opinion, the most poetic and beautiful subgenre in metal. I stayed away from this subgenre for almost two decades because I was scared of all the bad press, but when I finally decided to listen to some bands and artists, I fell in love instantly.

The best part of black metal, for me, is how the vast majority of the songs I have listened to are basically lyrical simping for mother nature. I fuck with it.

Also have a soft spot for DSBM and how it both puts a spotlight on and gives an outlet for deeply depressed and suicidal people. Almost therapeutic for some of them. That's so beautiful.

As for all the controversial stuff, I find it almost comical that most bands or artists I discover and enjoy has some weird controversy surrounding them if I start looking into it. At this point I just have to assume that it's a genre that attracts unstable people who decide to make music to have an outlet for their degenerate tendencies and as long as their degeneracy stays in their heads and isn't enacted onto other people, I don't really give a fuck what their beliefs are. Just keep it out of the music and I'm good. Simp for nature or make songs about how the grey concrete outside your window makes you want to slit your wrists. My ears will be listening.

I remember being kind of shocked that the original Mayhem related crime cases were all committed by teenagers. When I was a teen myself, I guess I thought it was like grown ups in gangs ala Hells Angel's, running around being nazis and burning churches and killing people. But it was really just a bunch of bored loser kids with mental problems.

Still, I dig the music. They did something different both in terms of sound and presentation and I can't hate them for inventing a new artform within a genre of music that is basically modern day classical music.

Btw, Blackbraid is, as far as I know pretty inoffensive, but then again, I haven't really kept up on the gossip surrounding him. He makes songs about simping for nature. 🤌

[–] UniversalBasicJustice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Agalloch

Botanist

Enisum

Gallowbraid (Also shoutout Caladan Brood)

Panopticon

Thrawsunblat

Wandering Oak

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Absolutely adore Agalloch. We listened to one of their albums a lot in the office for awhile. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion is one of my favourite songs ever. Everytime I want to give examples of amazing lyrics within black metal, I turn to this song.

Not sure I have heard of the others you listed (except for Enisum. It does ring a bell), but I'll look them up! Thank you. I'm assuming they all belong in the simping for nature category xD

[–] UniversalBasicJustice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You got it my dude. I've also got a separate list for space if that's your jam!

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 1 points 5 days ago

Stupid question, but what genre is space? :b

Also, I don't mind getting more bands and artists to listen to so feel free to share if you want :D

Mayhem's history is so wild.

[–] HeroHelck@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It really do suck that Jon Nödtveidt had to be so fucking good AND a completely unhinged lunatic killer.

[–] CyanideShotInjection@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

At least he's dead so I feel less bad listening to Storm of the Light's Bane

[–] HeroHelck@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

You're Damn Right.
