I like the Woody Guthrie line from his song Lindbergh about the American fascist collaborators in the 40s:

And I'm gonna tell you workers,
'fore you cash in your checks
They say "America First," but they mean "America Next!"
In Washington, Washington...

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Same Guthrie that wrote a couple song lyrics about Trump's father's properties and the racial divide that was there.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 30 points 3 weeks ago

From his 1955 song, Old Man Trump:

I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate
He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts
When he drawed that color line
Here at his Beach Haven family project

Beach Haven ain't my home!
No, I just can't pay this rent!
My money's down the drain,
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower
Where no black folks come to roam,
No, no, Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain't my home!

Complete hypothetical, stay with me, but if Trump was a Russian asset what would he be doing differently? 🤔

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 54 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

The only thing I can think of is to be less obvious about it.
A properly trained russian agent wouldn't be so blatantly corrupt, surely.

Then again he's a damned imbecile so he's doing the best he can with the 5 brain cells he's got.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

You get what you pay for. I have a feeling Trump is doing it for free.

Offer the country you’re spending billions against in a proxy war resources that will likely find their way, directly or indirectly, used against the US’s financial expenditures in the war.

No wonder this idiot bankrupted a casino.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 43 points 3 weeks ago

Four casinos.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 12 points 3 weeks ago

Don't forget: bankruptcy only affects the business, hence golden parachutes. Being a casino owner wasn't enough, bastard had to screw over the workers too

I don’t know how many times I need to spell it out Americans:

Line item #2

You need to deal with your worthless president hellbent on destroying the planet.

[–] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 74 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (51 children)

How. Tell us how to fight back against one of the most highly militarized police forces in the world and the most powerful army in the world? How are normal middle class Americans supposed to fight back against that? I mean I love the fantasy of fighting back, but tell me exactly how to do it. You tell me that and I'll start doing it.

I'd be willing to bet a decade from now we'll know that Trump probably cheated in the election and Republicans stole it. If there wasn't vote manipulation I'd be extremely surprised, knowing what we know about this administration and the people running it. How are we supposed to fight back against a system this fucking rigged?

It's really fucking easy to sit back in your armchair and call us dumb or lazy for not doing anything about this. I'm sure a lot of us would love to do something about it, so why don't you tell us how.

[–] IronpigsWizard@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

Especially when most people have some variation of, "I am going to work myself to death now for a comfortable later" burned into their head from generation after generation of parents.

The, "No Kings" protests basically accomplished nothing beyond a, "neat statistic", in my opinion.

Most people are tuned out, my worksite has 1000+ people at it, no one is talking about this stuff, ever. I am a bit, most people do not care, do not want to risk doing something or have shit going on in their personal lives that take priority.

Anyone critical should do themselves a favor and watch the 1961 film, "Judgment at Nuremberg". The USA judges' servants, when asked if they knew about concentration camps initially denied it. Then, seconds later (paraphrasing), "Even if we did, we are but little people, what could we do?".

P.S. Down voting doesn't change stated reality, sorry.

Thank you! I go to the protests, donate to the causes. We really are fucking helpless and it sucks.

It's a shitty feeling to know that you're doing everything you can and still have to watch our country speed run to authoritarian.

I have been saying for years he is going to donate Alaska to Russia...and now this.

I should not be, but I am entirely astonished right now, lol.

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Not donate, that would mean it's for a cause... Putin has said for a long time now he considers Alaska Russian property and wants it back. So Trump will just give it to him as if it was loaned from Russia.

This is also why Trump wants Canada and Greenland, he needs to find a way to balance things so it looks like a win for him... "We gave Alaska back to Russia, but won Greenland and Canada for the greatest usa, best deal ever!"

I would not be surprised in the slightest if he invades Greenland by next year.

At the very least he needs to find distractions to keep the American people drowning in chaos while the country slips even further in misery.

Yeah, in case you didn't realize, he's literally a fucking traitor, and he isn't going to stop fucking us over until a violent mob kills him. The longer we wait, the harder it will get. That's why it needs to be done before the end of the month

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

God bless user tags. This user wants to be able to use the n-word, by claiming it describes a mindset and pattern of behavior, and is not a racial slur. This is a blatant white supremacist talking point.

Trump is a bully, and what do bullies do when they enter the big kid playground ? they submit to the bigger bully.

[–] selkiesidhe@sh.itjust.works 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Big enough of a disaster to distract from the Epstein files?

What did you expect? Trump is a goddamn Kremlin Gremlin.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

So that's what he meant about a "big betrayal" to take the story away from Epstein.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We can’t supply weapons to the country getting attacked anymore, but we’ll give up our natural resources to the country that started the war? Trump is a bitch.

Trump is handling the peace negotiations in the most spectacularly embarrassing way. Giving the aggressors in a conflict concessions in exchange for a pinky swear that they won't do it again? Wow, what a concept. Historically bulletproof strategy that has never failed or backfired in any way.

I saw someone write once that Trump is so obsessed with making deals, and being known as a great dealmaker, to the point where the terms of the deal are often irrelevant to him. If the terms are favorable, he honors the deal. If he discovers later that the terms were not favorable to him, he reneges.

This kind of behavior works when you are a billionaire developing real estate because the people he screws over rarely have the funds to fight him in court, and have their workers' livelihoods to think about. Even if they do take him on, or they get a law team to work pro bono, he drags out the court proceedings and delays paying court judgements, or he opts to settle for much less than what was promised initially.

This doesn't work in geopolitics, but he doesn't know how to operate any other way. He wants to make a deal, and if he has to give away America's most valuable natural resources to close that deal, he'll do it. Doesn't matter if Putin has no intention of giving up the fight in Ukraine, Trump just wants to feel like he's some great peacemaker.

[–] Nightlight17776@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Woke up today to a headline that we are getting a stimulus check. Turns out it's just for Alaska. I keep saying if he does something good we have to acknowledge it but it just keeps not happening

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's not a stimulus check from the federal government. It is an annual check for Alaskan residents handed out since the oil started to flow through the pipelines up there.

The Alaska Permanent Fund (APF) is a permanent investment fund established in 1976, and managed by the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation corporation. It was created by an amendment to the state constitution. The idea was to put 25% of oil revenues into the fund to preserve it for future generation who would no longer have oil revenue to rely on. The original investment was about three quarters of a million dollars, the fund is now worth nearly $90 billion.

The stimulus check Is the Permanent Fund Dividend check given out every year based on the funds performance. Every year, anyone who has lived in the state for a full year and plans to stay indefinitely is eligible for a stimulus check.

It all sounds surprisingly socialist, for such a red state, and it's a big bonus for people struggling to get by up there. Pity everyone in the nation doesn't get a dividend check from big oil companies.
