President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday creating a task force to oversee the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and he's putting himself in charge of it.

The task force will coordinate federal planning for transportation, security and visa processing for the 2028 games. Mr. Trump said he's directing agencies like the State Department and Justice Department to "use every tool at their disposal to ensure a fantastic, safe and beautiful event."

The president will personally chair the task force — in line with a similar Trump-led task force to oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup — and Vice President JD Vance will serve as its vice chair. Other members include Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.

In response to questions from reporters, the president said Tuesday, "we'll do anything necessary to keep the Olympics safe, including using our National Guard or military."

It is time for good old Olympic Games boycot. The last major boycot was 1984 when the games were in ... wait a minute,... in LA. "All of this has happened before, and will happen again".

He's going to try to outdo the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics.

Who is the Jesse Owens equivalent for 2026? Will we see a Palestinian or a Cuban or perhaps a South African waving a gold medal while Trump looks on sourly?

[–] Alaik@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Any of those will be detained by ICE immediately.

Not just these: the Olympics are thoroughly corrupted

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

No more Olympics!

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hope LA just decides to cancel. It would be a disaster anyway with a large proportion of the attendees and participants not coming for fear of ICE or whatever other Republican military force Trump decides to "secure" the event with

[–] dukeofdummies@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I was literally just thinking that. Vegas is a ghost town, most countries are in fear of being stopped at TSA, A Canadian was held for over a week...

This is gonna be a very weird Olympics.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seriously, what non US citizen would ever want go there to watch it or worse, participate?

I'm sorry, but for the next -at least- 4 years, I won't visit the US, too dangerous. I haven't done anything wrong, I'm not a criminal, I'm a perfect stand-up citizen and I'm fucking terrified to visit that fascist country. There is always a non zero chance you'll end up in a torture prison for no other reason than having the wrong skin color, the wrong opinion, the wrong anything.

I wouldn't go there if offered a million dollars, I'm not even kidding as it could literally mean the end of my life.

I know that athletes are dreaming about the Olympics but ask yourself, is it really REALLY worth it? Wait until the next Olympics or just go for something different

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Seriously, what non US citizen would ever want go there to watch it or worse, participate?

Plenty of people who train their whole lives for a single moment in the spotlight simply aren't paying attention to the US political scene. Plenty more are, themselves, coming from countries with brutal dictatorial governments and slavishly servile media networks, and simply don't see what the big deal is.

I wouldn’t go there if offered a million dollars

I won't say these competitions aren't about the money, because a ton of it changes hands and the system is notoriously corrupt. But, for the athletes themselves, this isn't just "giving up a million dollars". It's "giving up the last ten years of a 16 year old's life's work".

It would be like telling Magnus Carlson to give up on chess or Jose Altuv to stop playing baseball.

Wait until the next Olympics or just go for something different

Would you give this advice to Jesse Owens?

[–] derry@midwest.social 18 points 1 day ago

Release the Olympics Epstein files

[–] omega_x3@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

LA was chosen because the last LA Olympics was the last time a city didn't rack up a huge debt getting things ready for the Olympics. And since there have been fewer and fewer cities requesting to host they picked LA extra early in hopes that LA can again keep the cost low enough that other cities might want to host again.

And now the idiot in chief is going to put himself in charge and insist that this be the biggest dumbest event ever to try to show off how great he is. And after the embarrassment of his birthday parade there is no way he is going to trust someone else to do this and if LA and the US goes bankrupt paying for it, then well that is Obama's and Biden's fault.

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

Wait until no one shows up like his bigly bestest military parade.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago (3 children)

There's no way the Olympics can really happen. First, Trump will be refusing to issue visas to athletes from countries that fail to give him big cash donations. Then, ICE will end up detaining the best athletes from other countries just to make sure it's the American athletes who win.

What country would send its prized athletes here when they could end up detained and brutalized for months by ICE?

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago

I'd also be terrified to be a female athlete. Probably the reason Trump wants to head the committee, so he can personally inspect each and every competitor to make sure they're not actually trans.

Obviously he won't check for trans men, because that'd be gay, and no woman could ever compete with a "real" man so there's really no point, since they'd probably barely tie for 5th, and literally no one would care about that.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Then, ICE will end up detaining the best athletes from other countries just to make sure it’s the American athletes who win.

More likely, they'll just pick out the middling athletes from countries the US doesn't like in order to make a spectacle of abusing them. Like, heaven help the fucking North Korean or Iranian or Cuban delegations. Heaven help anyone arriving from Palestine.

Y'know, why can't there be 2 Olympics? One hosted somewhere else at the same time to just ignore and exile the US. I'm sorry the state has become a parasite leeching on the globe

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 237 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Boycott the Olympics. Full stop.

Do not participate. Do not let your athletes go to a fascist country. Do not watch or follow any streams. And if you live in this shithole, don't go.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago

Sign up for a free trial of Peacock and cancel it right before the Olympics to fuck NBC's numbers.

[–] dumbluck@midwest.social 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They didn't boycott Hitler's Berlin Olympics. Now we come full circle...

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The Olympics have never placed ethics or morality above a large payday.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

IOC is probably as corrupt as trumps admin to be honest.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

They’ve been doing it for longer so they can hide it better, if they want.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ABANDON ALL INTERACTION WITH THIS HELLHOLE

how are you fucking up the Olympics, the football World Cup, your economy AND the global hegemony world order so badly in mere months???

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 171 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

This article ignores the most important part of this: Congress allocated a cool $1B in security funding for the games. This commission is simply about grifting that. Thats why Trump himself is in charge, he wants to hand out no-bid contracts like tic tacs.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 71 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Plus, it will hurt LA somehow. You can't have a democratic city with a governor he hates running things successfully.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Boy, NYC is in for a fun time when they elect Mamdani

[–] Hellinabucket@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

LA should just bow out, cancel the whole thing. Not worth it.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Haha that'd be hilarious...

...please please please.

Would be funny if it ended up being hosted in some shitty red state.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Oh man let it be Texas with their practically no building codes and already ridiculously poor public transit (in spite of tons of railways and massive, albeit quite stunning, urban highways).

Would love to watch a bunch shoddy rushed lowest-bidder stadiums on live TV. Do it.

Trump's smile looks like a duck with its bill chopped off

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 50 points 2 days ago (5 children)

why would any country send athletes to the Olympics hosted in the US?

I really hope Canada just says fuck no. yes, it sucks for athletes who have been training for this. the whole situation also sucks for the rest of us.

I won't be supporting this and I will try to avoid supporting any athlete or sponsor of this.

[–] Ronno@feddit.nl 20 points 2 days ago (4 children)

As much as I want that to happen, it won't. Look at previous examples of Olympics hosted in Russia or China. Or look at the World Cup football in Qatar, in stadiums that were built by slaves, some of them died during construction. Countries didn't boycot those events, why would that happen now?

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 14 points 2 days ago

And by "some of them", you mean an estimated 6500 workers have died building the stadiums in Qatar. Didn't stop Johnny football from enjoying his pints with the games.

Boycotting the Olympics is in keeping with my policy of never visiting the United States again.

It is demonstrably unsafe to go there.

Jesus Christ. Is there anything Hitler did that Trump doesn't want to replicate?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Is there anything Hitler did that Trump doesn't want to replicate?

Probably something involving a bunker and a loaded Walther, but gee golly are we all rooting for him.

Everybody needs to boycott this shit...

It's not safe for US citizens currently, certainly not for non-citizens. It's not just the athletes but the support staff and fans that would also come over.

It's just flat out not responsible for foreign countries to encourage their citizens to come here at the moment.

We need to make executive orders not a thing

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 47 points 2 days ago (4 children)

We need to fix congress and make them capable of tying their own shoes again, so executive orders won't be needed.
