Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Yes go ahead, destroy your economy.

The Continental system but somehow even stupider than the first try

At this point, just sanction the whole world for having Russia on their maps.

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You said the word Russia, prepare to be sanctioned

Every Western country trying to kneecaps itself by cutting itself off from the manufacturing capital of the world is very funny to me

The EU's economic suicide will be studied for decades to come.

Can I put a short position on the EU?

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 32 points 1 day ago

The EU made this move following a July report by Reuters, which revealed that Russia had secretly obtained Chinese engines for drones.

How the fuck are you depending on Reuters or any news outlet for this shit? Like don't they have "intelligence" about this stuff?

[–] RaspberryTuba@hexbear.net 54 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You have to go to the very end of the source of the source for this article (two layers deep) to find this:

Describing them as cooling units allowed the goods to be exported to Russia without alerting Chinese authorities, the three security officials said.

AKA even their sources aren’t totally selling the story like this.

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 42 points 1 day ago

News articles are just whatever an intelligence agency says anyways, so they're just saying this instead of "because our [CIA owners'] intelligence says so."

[–] EldenRingBedTime@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago

They need the media to justify it to the masses. And they feed Reuters info they want published anyway.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 27 points 1 day ago

remarkable isn't it

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

Aren't engines for drones manufactured almost exclusively in China though? Probably most Ukrainian drones use Chinese motors too

[–] BynarsAreOk@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

I don't think this is the correct interpretation. This sentence is not an assertion that the EU didn't know its only establishing a sequence of events. Very often politicians will react to news reports, you know, to save face etc... They just don't want to appear to let this slide now that the public knows.

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 day ago

HAHAHA, I didn't even notice this shit.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 60 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fuck yes, press the destroy economy button because you couldn't handle the consequences of your own actions

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago

They're probably trying to save what's left of their industry because Chinese goods found a new home in Europe with US tariffs.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"due to its support of Russia war against ukraine"

and its just buying stuff from them

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They cant even stop buying russian gas themselves 😭

Such a failed "union" the only shit they actually produce is german cars that suck ass and furniture made out of cardboard.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

The EU is very successful at heeding Uncle Sam’s demands to collectively jump off a cliff

[–] Dr_Gabriel_Aby@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is 146BC sack of Corinth, the old world west is completely subservient to America at this point. It’s time to update the map of the American Empire

[–] redchert@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 23 hours ago

I have been calling it western empire for a reason.

very rare Brexit W

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can they just make up their minds. Do they want more trade with China or are tehy going to keep running back to the US over and over again.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago

They'll be the dogs of empire at least until the US collapses.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I can't possibly see how this will backfire in any way. It's not like Trump will continue making escalating demands of the EU or anything.

[–] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 23 points 1 day ago

It's amazing to see. I mean, on the humorous side, it's an obvious own goal.

In the sombre and cynical side, it's a decoupling in advance of war.

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

That's fine, I'll just buy european. [somebody hands me a note] oh fuck!

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Due to China's support of Russia or because Chinese goods have been flooding Europe due to the US's tariffs?

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Because the US wants to squeeze them dry.
