News articles are just whatever an intelligence agency says anyways, so they're just saying this instead of "because our [CIA owners'] intelligence says so."

Aren't engines for drones manufactured almost exclusively in China though? Probably most Ukrainian drones use Chinese motors too
I don't think this is the correct interpretation. This sentence is not an assertion that the EU didn't know its only establishing a sequence of events. Very often politicians will react to news reports, you know, to save face etc... They just don't want to appear to let this slide now that the public knows.
