The idea of doing any sort of general preamble for China is a little absurd given how ubiquitous they are in economics and politics, so I'm just going to hop right in to a recent news item of interest: China is working on the construction of an enormous new hydropower project in Tibet (@Metabola@hexbear.net had brought this up just before the last news mega ended).

This project (consisting of, I believe, five dams) will be overall three times larger than the Three Gorges Dam, will cost $167 billion, and will supply 70 GW (by itself more power than several significant countries generate). There are, of course, meaningful concerns regarding concerning environmental damage, but helping to avert catastrophic climate change seems worth it. The news coming out of the clean energy sector of China has getting only more encouraging over the last few years, even as the fully neoliberalized Europe and America descend into climate skepticism and refuse to adequately fund projects that could avert the worst of climate change.

Geopolitically, given recent India-China tensions (for example, sending Pakistan the equipment to shoot down Indian jets, as well as run-of-the-mill border tensions) one expects India to not receive the news very well, as the river upon which the dam is being constructed proceeds to flow into Arunachal Pradesh. But from what I understand of the Indian hydrological situation (which is, admittedly, not much), I don't think enough of the water in India comes from the river for China to hypothetically cause any kind of water shortages in India - the monsoons seem to supply plenty of freshwater all by themselves. Nonetheless, as with all Chinese news, wild fearmongering abounds.

About 10 hours ago Handala started streaming live CCTV footage from the ship so thousands have been literally keeping an eye on them.

you can follow along here, they are less than 2 hours from the location the madleen was abducted from https://www.youtube.com/live/A4hF5rA-v-Q

Edit: for those who dont know who Handala is, why the name is significant. he is representing a palestinian refugee, usually drawn with a key in his hand for return. but also with his back turned and tattered clothes symbolizing the palestinian struggle and how we've been forgotten by the world. Artist Naji Al Ali drew handala and it has become a symbll of resistance, my dad gave me a handala necklace when i was really young like 8 years old.

Looks like Thailand is preparing to militarily occupy parts of Cambodia and enter the country. Thai tanks amassing at the border, Thailand mobilising their sole VL MICA air defence battery in response to Cambodia's use of long range rocket artillery, and the full complement of the Thai Air Force (Gripens and F-16s) and Navy bombing Cambodia.

Well, darlings… The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed.

From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news what a ride it’s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried… most days.

To my supporters: You made this wild political cabaret worth it. To my critics: Thanks for the free press.

I may be leaving the stage (for now), but trust me legends never truly exit. 💋🇺🇸✨

Forever fabulously yours, George

Just came to mind that once the war in Ukraine ends (likely in favor of Russia except for the 5% case Prigo rides a motorcycle out of hell into the Kremlin) all the OUN fans are gonna go all in on Stabbed In The Back rhetoric against Zelensky if the gov stays intact aren’t they

And if the gov gets replaced by one that’s more Russia-friendly + Union State-sympathetic the ppl organizing the opposition to it (cause the new gov is probably gonna have like next to no popular support) are gonna be ex-Azov guys too

And if NecroPrigo DOES ride into the Kremlin the OUN fans are still gonna be normalized as war heroes and get to seep deeper into the mainstream and socialism is still gonna be ostracized as a Thing For Russians for at least the next 20 years

doomjak all I wanted was for the An-225 to be salvageable this shit fuckn sucks

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 2 points 40 minutes ago

I've been thinking about how the US got to do what they did covertly in Operation Bloodstone, but extremely overtly via giving weapons to far right paramilitary groups in Ukraine. There was never a world, since 2022, where it wasn't plainly known by everyone paying attention that Ukrainian Nazis were getting military aid from the US. It was literally in broad daylight. And we all know the kinds of blowback it's going to lead to when the war is over. There will be something like ISIS in Europe.

Trump considers imposing sanctions against Lula's inner circle. In the medium term, the measures could be exacerbated by the possible disaccreditation of Ambassador Maria Luiza Viotti Ribeiro in Washington, which would effectively mean her expulsion from the United States.

The motivation for the retaliation is political, not commercial. The plan, which is already in the hands of the US Secretary of State, according to sources heard by CNN, provides for a phased escalation, considering the likely reactions of the Brazilian government. The strategy is part of a broader attempt by Donald Trump to impose ideological alignment in the Americas, which may extend in the future to other countries such as Mexico and Colombia.

If I was Brazil I would be asking China to station nukes in the country right about now

[–] CarmineCatboy2@hexbear.net 8 points 5 hours ago

This is what he should have done from the start. But he couldn't help himself with the tariff game, and then issuing that ultimatum about Brazil's agribusiness and national payments system. Had he just sanctioned the supreme court and the government's officials, there'd would have been a much stronger ground for the far right to stand on. Now they only have their most brainwashed supporters to work with.

And if tariffs never even happen in the first place, all the talks about how 'we must submit because this is basically a nuclear option' just turns into reactionary defeatism.

I translated it from Portuguese (most stuff I post here come from Spanish/Portuguese speaking sources, I guess some stuff doesn't translate well to English). I suppose the better translation would be perjury or false statements.

[–] Maturin@hexbear.net 2 points 27 minutes ago

Oh yeah. Thats exactly what I was asking and this answers it. Makes way more sense that way.

Trump Administration Reverses Course, Allows Restart of Chevron Operations in Venezuela - Venezuelanalysis

Article

The White House has sought to balance policy demands from regime-change hardliners and MAGA operators who warn against so-called Chinese influence in Venezuela.

The Donald Trump administration has walked back a major sanctions policy by granting Chevron a new sanctions waiver to operate in Venezuela.

This week, the US Treasury Department issued a specific license allowing the Texas-based corporation to restart oil extraction and sales operations in the Caribbean nation. The Wall Street Journal first reported the move on Thursday.

White House and Treasury officials have yet to comment on the policy U-turn. Unlike general licenses, which are publicly disclosed, specific licenses can be issued privately to select firms.

A State Department official quoted by the Miami Herald offered no details on the new sanctions waiver but claimed that Washington “will not allow the Maduro regime to profit from the sale of oil.” However, both Venezuelan legislation and the fact that Chevron is a minority partner in joint ventures suggest that oil operations generate revenues for the Venezuelan state.

Chevron owns between 30 and 40 percent of shares in four joint ventures, with Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA owning majority stakes. The enterprises’ recent output stood between 200,000 and 250,000 barrels per day (bpd), roughly a quarter of the country’s total production.

The Herald report added that Chevron negotiated changes to its contract with PDVSA on Wednesday in Caracas, and that under the new arrangement, the company would pay its Venezuelan partner in barrels of oil.

With US sanctions blocking PDVSA’s access to financial markets, the Venezuelan company has allowed Chevron to take over all sales operations, delivering the owed compensation to the Venezuelan state through various mechanisms in recent years. The renewed agreement could mean that PDVSA and Chevron will commercialize their respective production shares separately. The Venezuelan state firm could also direct crude to domestic refineries.

The Trump administration’s decision marks a minor but not insignificant retreat from the “maximum pressure” campaign against Venezuela introduced in its first term (2017-2021). The South American nation’s oil industry remains under financial sanctions and an export embargo, having also been targeted with secondary sanctions and other measures aimed at cutting off its most important revenue source.

The Biden administration issued General License 41 (GL41) in November 2022, allowing Chevron to resume crude pumping and exporting activities in its Venezuelan joint projects.

Earlier this year, the Trump White House succumbed to pressure from Florida Congress members who demanded a tightening of coercive measures against Venezuela in exchange for supporting key legislative proposals from the Republican administration.

The US Treasury Department withdrew GL41 and issued a specific license in May following a wind-down period. The new waiver reportedly only allowed Chevron to perform basic maintenance activities, with PDVSA subsequently taking over oilfield operations.

In contrast to predictions of an immediate oil sector setback, Venezuela has maintained crude production and export levels in recent months. Last month, PDVSA directed 90 percent of its cargoes to Chinese refineries.

Trump’s foreign policy towards Venezuela has sparked tensions among allies. Hardliners, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have openly advocated for harsher sanctions and regime change operations, whereas MAGA politicians and commentators have called for leveraging coercive measures to favor US corporate interests and stave off growing ties with China.

Washington has threatened to levy “secondary tariffs” on countries that receive Venezuelan energy exports, but the measure has not been enacted to date.

Alongside the withdrawal of Chevron’s license, the US Treasury likewise forced Eni (Italy), Maurel & Prom (France) and Repsol (Spain) to wind down their activities in the country. It is presently unknown whether the European corporations will receive similar permissions to restart operations.

The White House’s Chevron policy reversal comes in the wake of an agreement that saw Caracas release 10 detained US nationals and permanent residents in exchange for 252 Venezuelan migrants that the US had deported to the notorious CECOT mega prison in El Salvador.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro acknowledged Chevron’s renewed sanctions waiver on Thursday evening, adding that there are working plans underway for the resumption of its activities. The Maduro government has consistently condemned Washington’s coercive measures while vowing that the country will continue its economic recovery.

So a pretty insane story from Egypt is currently unfolding. Two Egyptian young dudes stormed a State Security police station in the Al-Massara district of Helwan and detained officers for five hours. The aim of this operation is allegedly protesting against the Egyptian regime’s policies, specifically demanding the opening of the Rafah crossing to allow food and aid into Gaza. The Egyptian Interior Ministry denied of course the whole incident, but we have multiple angles, and a four minute voice message from one of the guys that was recorded on Thursday. In the voice message, he called the operation "Hadid 17" in reference to Aya 17 in Surat Al Hadid in the Quran, "Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death! Indeed, We have made clear the Signs to you, if you but reflect [upon them].". He said that he wanted to give life to the dormant people of Egypt and inspire them to rise against the State. They also leaked tens of documents which shows the scale of arrests made by the Egyptian state, with tons of people being arrested for "Ikhwanism" or "Islamic proselytization", which is just insane. One guy was arrested as a 14 year old for "Extremism". The fate of those guys is still unknown, but I hope they're safe. It's pretty cool that this is happening on the same day that George Abdallah asked the people of Egypt to rise.

Goes to show how fake and externally imposed the "Arab Spring" was considering that we arent seeing the kinds of mobilization in the streets or the defection within the police and military like occurred 14 years ago. Instead of US-israel fomenting discontent, financing "opposition" NGOs and bribing government officials, they are helping Sisi with his counterinsurgency.

Kinda makes you think "regimes" dont just fall on their own. 🤔

Bernie has evolved from putting everything bad on Netanyahu to "the extremist Israeli government". Still shit but at least it actually has "Israel" in it.

Although even when talking about mass starvation he's still calling it "ethnic cleansing" and not genocide.

Today's MoA post linked to this disturbing data regarding the scale of the Gaza genocide:

https://stevendonziger.substack.com/p/shock-israel-has-killed-207-of-gazas

"Most informed observers know that the actual death count in Gaza due to Israel’s attacks on the territory is far worse than the large media outlets are reporting. Last February, my colleague Coll McCail — an astute college student in Glasgow — worked out a basic mathematical calculation that the corporate media refuses to do. The result of this calculation back then was chilling; now it is much worse.

Here is the latest data, updated as of yesterday (July 21): based on a statistical model developed by a prestigious medical journal called The Lancet, Israel has killed roughly 434,800 people in Gaza since the country’s military started to attack the territory on 8 October 2023. That’s 20.7% of Gaza’s entire pre-conflict population dead. Over half are women and children."

[–] Lisitsyn@hexbear.net 1 points 1 hour ago

if this goes on any longer it'll be half or more. death to israel and america, all forms of resistance are justified, i cannot even tactically condemn adventurism anymore
