If you've been lax about masking, now is a good time to pick it back up. Especially in busy public places.

There are two different variants that might be at play, the one that started in Asia/Australia is more contagious due to better ACE2 binding, which seems bad.

But the new strategy our country and most people I know are going with is "just catch it, spread it to as many people as possible, and get it over with so you can go back to brunch" so good luck to everyone.

Florida is seeing the largest increases in transmission of any state right now. Almost 3x higher than any time in the past 9 months.

Other southern and west coast states are rising too but not as quickly. Everywhere else is staying low+flat.

Florida transmission rate - to the moon

people @ work: "everybody's sick!" "some kind of virus going around" "people keep calling out"

me: "you know covid is still around right"

it's weird how that flips a switch and triggers a brief flashback followed by return to previous brainstate

and i work in a frontline job where people we know died from it during the first waves. so maybe there's just an extra layer of trauma there

My workplace has fired about 5 people in the past year for calling out too much, as they were dealing with new chronic health problems.

[–] blunder@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You can fire someone for that??

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yep, if you call out too much. My workplace isn't unionized and we can get fired for pretty much any reason.

excited for people to come down with the worst sickness of their lives, be bedridden for weeks and complain their throat feels like it's coated in razorblades, then immediately say "it's not covid" without testing at all. it's never covid, and if you suggest it is then you're crazy and overreacting.

It's just the seasonal summer flu, trust me bro

COVID is back? I thought it went away? First time I'm hearing this trump-who-must-go

But seriously, solidarity with anyone out there still trying to protect themself and/or their community, especially if you are surrounded by a bunch of reactionaries who have profound mask trauma from not being able to drink inside a Starbucks for like four weeks in 2020.

It would originate in Florida classic

[–] isame@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago

Yup. I live in Florida and was reading through waiting for it, and there it was!

My state shows as low but also the 3 biggest cities don't have testing sites. ugh.

Every time I see a post like this I think "honestly I think it already hit here" because every couple months some sort of infection goes around and gets like half the nonmasking people I know. This time it might have been wildfire smoke not covid tho.

Wastwater has shown covid to be pretty low since winter, but it also is always detected, so it's always around to some degree. But we've also been getting hit by record waves of flu and RSV since winter. I'm sure the regular common cold hasn't gone away, either.

Yep. There's always something, especially now with everyone's immune systems being fucked

Where did you get the chart? Want to look at my state

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Are there vaccines or they illegal now?

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

With brainworm in charge it's a bit up in the air. Right now they are approved for 65+ or people with a health condition and not recommended to anyone else, so it's up to you to pay self attest that you have a condition and/or pay out of pocket if you don't have insurance or your insuance doesn't want to cover it. Some places are just doing what they've always done and give them to anyone who wants one, some places are being strict about it. It's a fucking mess. Other countries have been restricting access to the vaccines as well, and RFKjr is citing them as an example for why the US should restrict them as well. All of this might change on a whim.

the-republican the-democrat COVID is over. Stop asking questions.

[–] da_gay_pussy_eatah@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Are vaccines even effective at this point?

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Yes, if you got one in the fall you probably won't have antibodies to fight an infection off immediatly, but will have t and b immune cells that should eventually recognize an infection and fight it off. The problem is covid has ways to evade the immune system and damages everything in your body it interacts with when it gets into the bloodstream until your body starts fighting back, and t-cells themselves work by destroying infected cells, which means some level of damage throughout your body. Hopefully it's insignificant, but there's large communities of people who haven't been so lucky and are just kind of fucked. Last time I heard the odds of some kind of long term health problem being aquired was about 3.5% odds, or basically the odds of rolling snake eyes on a pair of dice, every infection. The odds may have gotten better, but I don't think anyone's really keeping track anymore, and most people aren't testing for covid.

I registered for the covid vaccine five months ago on Mega Lo Mart's website, but the pharmacists realized they didn't have any when they went to get mine for injection. 🙃

At least I got a flu shot.

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Did you get a rain check or something?

[–] da_gay_pussy_eatah@hexbear.net 5 points 6 months ago

Just got my new dose of 5G, thanks comrade 😎
