Donald Trump has responded to planned "No Kings" protests against his leadership, saying "we're not a king at all."

Demonstrations targeting him are planned nationwide on Saturday, the same day as a military parade celebrating the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary in Washington, D.C, which coincides with the president's 79th birthday.

The use of the royal “we” seems to indicate otherwise…

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 85 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

To be honest, it probably actually was a slip of the tongue. He's nowhere near that clever.

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 year ago

Right, he's legitimately not intelligent enough to realize he came close to an actual fucking joke.

[–] xyzzy@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

He says "we" all the time to refer to himself.

The royal "we"

He’s not using the royal “we”—that’s a common point of confusion. He’s actually using the caesaropapal “we”.

You, Lemonspeed, and I all joined Lemmy the same day.

[–] orclev@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I was curious so I checked and apparently I beat you by one day. I wonder what the date distribution looks like around that time for people joining.

The resulting outcry from the Reddit community ultimately led to a planned protest, from June 12 to 14 in which moderators for the site would make their communities private or would restrict posting.

You must've been smarter than us.

A pretty high peak I’m guessing. My two years is in 3 days.

Strange, he was the one to lable himself a king first, followed by the whitehouse...

What was the prompt? Trump as King Disco Elysium style?

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 90 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Trump isn’t a king the same way Augustus wasn’t a king—they became something even more extreme, while dressing themselves up in the shells of the republican institutions they destroyed.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 73 points 1 year ago

Arguing over the technicality of a word vs his actions. Children do this.

[–] fake_meows@lemm.ee 72 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The royal "we". Interesting.

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Right? Real life once again proving to be shitty satire

[–] dzsimbo@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

Not in this case. Real life is accidentally so shitty, it makes for passable satire. I mean if the dude would've conciously pulled it off, I'd almost be okay with him.

Ohhhh, look who’s trying to weasel out of his customary BEHEADING.

His reasoning as to not being a king is that he's trying to be a king and it's harder than he expected? Is the sword of damocles too scary for him??

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Completely unrelated, but the band Sleep Token released a song title Damocles in their recent album, and it's great. The whole album and everything they release is great, but I am particularly fond of Damocles.

[–] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Damoclese is dope. Caramel hits hard in the feels for me. Just feel for Vessel.

So he's too stupid to know about the royal "we."

That figures.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

C'mon guys...everyone knows he prefers, "God Emperor".

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hm, enormous corpulent worm? Maybe

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

Except that worm was Prescient. Trump has so far shown no sentience, let alone prescience.

"We are not a king. We are Venom!"

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 12 points 1 year ago

I think you misspelled "Vermin"

Don’t do Venom dirty like that.

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 24 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Not going to lie, I'm really irritated that his birthday falls on the exact date of this anniversary... He can have his birthday dictator worship and claim that's not what it's for and make us look "ungrateful to the army" for protesting it...

[–] Placebonickname@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Might get lucky this year and cancel the military parade due to thinderstorms

The entire Donald Trump arc is proof that God exists and wants to punish humanity.

"Calm down folks, and I mean folks, there are no kings here. Just one, me! The best king with the very most words. Make my bank account Grat again and go fuck yourself! See you in the Golfclub losers. "

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It says "No kings". We're allowed to have one.
