Nearly two dozen species are being taken off the endangered species list because they are extinct, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Monday.

Most of the species were listed under the Endangered Species Act in the 1970s or 1980s and were very low in numbers or likely already extinct at the time of listing. In the years since, "rigorous reviews of the best available science" have been conducted to determine whether the animals are extinct.

"Federal protection came too late to reverse these species' decline, and it's a wake-up call on the importance of conserving imperiled species before it's too late," Service Director Martha Williams said.

They lived happily together, for the rest of their lives… which happened the next day when their car broke down on the rail crossing area

I was just thinking a few minutes ago that I need to read less news because it’s all just bad. Then I read this first part of the headline and thought for a second “hey it’s not all bad…”

I just need to burry my head.

Dang, this one was really cool looking! 😓

Oʻahu ʻakialoa

Bad news overall for Hawaii's birds and the shellfish that could clean up southern waterways.

I recently posted an article on !superbowl@lemmy.world about how British Columbia is ignoring government orders to protect the last wild Spotted Owl in the country. With all the BS the US and Canada seem to be focused on, it's sad they will just let things disappear forever.

[-] chtk@feddit.nl 21 points 1 year ago

is there an article somewhere I can read?

Did you have a specific subject in mind?

I did find this article.

[-] qooqie@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Perfect thank you!

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I was hoping this would be some random article.

[-] theyoyomaster@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

There is actually an article there, it’s just hidden by the video until the website decides to annoyed you long enough to show an X to close it.

[-] knexcar@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Why would you need an article when you have a headline and expert commentary in the comments?

[-] Usually_Lurker@artemis.camp 4 points 1 year ago

The 21 species being removed include one mammal, 10 types of birds, two species of fish and eight types of mussels. Eight of the 21 species were found in Hawaii.

[-] Draedron@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 1 year ago

If "conserving" means catching them and putting them in zoos to suffer I prefer letting them go extinct.

[-] Stoneykins@mander.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

It doesn't.
