House Republicans have unveiled the cost-saving centerpiece of Trump's “big, beautiful bill,” at least $880 billion in cuts largely to Medicaid to help cover the cost of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks.

Tallying hundreds of pages, the legislation revealed late Sunday is touching off the biggest political fight over health care since Republicans tried but failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, during Trump's first term in 2017.

While Republicans insist they are simply rooting out “waste, fraud and abuse” to generate savings with new work and eligibility requirements, Democrats warn that millions of Americans will lose coverage. A preliminary estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the proposals would reduce the number of people with health care by 8.6 million over the decade.

Targeting the poor specifically.

That’s, like, one of their favorite things

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago

It’s one of their many twisted fetishes

Republicans are the enemy of anyone outside of the billionaire class. They have persisted by duping the dumbest and least discerning for decades, aided by the machinery of religion, which inherently removes the ability to parse facts from fiction.

Republicans are a threat to America.

“I knew it,” snarled the frog, as they both thrashed and drowned. “A scorpion cannot change its nature.”

[–] nyan_cat@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

'Lol' said the scorpion, 'lmao'

[–] OldManBOMBIN@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

What? But I just saw a nice comic about a scorpion and a frog that were friends.

[–] thedruid@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

What do you expect? I'm a scorpion!

Guys! You're totally missing the point here! Trump's getting a $400 million dollar plane, so it's absolutely worth it when some stupid poor people lose their jobs and others get sicker and/or die because their medicaid's been cut! He really needs all that money to refit the whole thing, so I'm totally alright with losing my job so he can fly style... Make America great again!!!

[–] MonkeyBrawler@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That plane is closer to 2.5b, and people need to stop saying it's only 400m.

[–] GiuseppeAndTheYeti@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It really doesn't matter when the number is that large and its the ethics of accepting such a valuable gift anyway. My main concern other than ethics is that it's going to cost taxpayers a significant amount more to retrofit the plane with defense systems, communications, and redundancies than to just build it that way from scratch. Plus they'll need to verify security of electrical components and systems as well. All of that will be done on our dime since it will be the Air Force performing all of that.

[–] MonkeyBrawler@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

No.... it's worth 8 times the amount everyone is quoting. Quantify it.

[–] Bouzou@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Anyone know how this will actually cost America? (I know Medicare & Medicaid are basically the lifeblood of every medical institution...)

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

Millions of vulnerable people lose medical coverage. Family's got to step up and pay out of pocket or Uncle Jimmy doesn't get cancer treatment. We're going to have a lot of dead, poor, relatives on our hands.

Those Medicaid and Medicare payments don't just go to the poor, they actually fund the medical practices seen those people. You'll see a lot of small practices go under.

Prices at hospitals will go up. Insurance costs will rise, because they're not just going to take all these high risk people on and eat the cost.

It's a big fucked up ecosystem, full of legitimate issues and full of greedy AF motherfuckere that will use any excuse they can find to deny more treatments, charge more money, and het that much richer

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 43 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Who could have seen this coming!? Republicans shitting on poor people. /s

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

”It's not fair! The poor get all the breaks!"

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Hey, someone has to provide shade for poor people.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 11 points 2 days ago

How about retirement at 95?

[–] AngrySquirrel@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Meh, I prefer the Remington Retirement Plan. I heard it's a blast.

[–] derpgon@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Kurt can vouch, works every time

[–] AngrySquirrel@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

works every time

It really doesn't though... If you get the angle wrong it can and does fail in horrific ways. That was one of the things my instructors thought us in EMT class (they even showed us a video).

In the mouth is safer than under the chin.

[–] derpgon@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago

I know, that's why I got the helmet to make sure.

For Kurt, it worked every time tho.

At this point my retirement plan is "eaten by starving cannibals in a Falloutverse story", or "9mm"

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

Not bad. I to wanna go down tasty. Some people wanna go down fighting. Not me! I'm all for chilly and salty and lemony.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Life in prison is a good one.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Retirement is for the lazy. People should work until they die at their machines. That's what they get for not demanding robots.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

No! This was a bad comment. I take it back.

People should totally live and have friends.
