So we’re gonna let a foreign government gift us Air Force one.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 81 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Personally, I don't care on that front. If they remotely turn it off in the air, good. Trump's taking it with him when he leaves, and no other president is likely be stupid enough to trust it even if he didn't.

Now, the fact that it's probably just one giant listening device... I guess I'd be concerned about, but they're not likely to learn much from listening to Senile Saddam ramble nonsense while he gropes the flight attendants.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

True. Trump or one of his cronies are gonna just blab it on Signal or live on TV.

Heck, knowing what we know about them maybe having a listening device giving their innermost insanities might provide enough noise to overwhelm the signal.

[–] veroxii@aussie.zone 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He live tweets every stupid "thought" he has in any case.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 5 points 2 months ago

Diarrhea brain. It comes with senility.

How much do we see him after dark? I'll bet he has sundowners, too.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I can only see one point of Trump doing this deal.

Spite.

He is still pissed off that his new livery design won't be part of the VC-25Bs, and he will now have his own jet that will be managed outside of normal channels, just so he can get a few photo ops as the first president to fly a private 747-800, that will probably be painted in the livery that he approved.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

Of all the people who got to be president he feels like the one who wanted it the least.

He hates Camp David for fuck’s sake.

Just gonna keep posting this:

"It's vile."
They want it that way.

"It's inhumane."
They want it that way.

"It's dangerous."
They want it that way.

"It's criminal."
They want it that way.

"It's illegal."
They want it that way.

The current administration is doing all the evil because...they want it that way.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Tell me, why?! It ain't nothing but a heartbreak...

[–] Caffeinated_Sloth@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ain’t nothing but a big mistake…

[–] RandoMcRanderton@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Tell me why! I never wanna hear you say, "I voted that way."

[–] TwistedCister@lemm.ee 59 points 2 months ago

They’re not showing fealty by providing money or luxury items. They’re showing how cheap he is to buy. The optics are worth far more than the gifts.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 52 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm sure it will be filled to the brim with surveillance devices.

Qatar will earn that jet back in no time by doing insider trading and selling intel.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 months ago

Maybe. If I've learned anything from recent history, I don't think they need to get even that devious to have this moron tell them anything he wants.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 months ago

I personally know the chief engineer for air force one and he's going to absolutely shit himself. There is no way that aircraft can pass a security and airworthiness audit without performing a check so invasive that it would be cheaper just to built a new one.

Trump likely won't have that so I guess they're going to fly bugged to the teeth. Hopefully they crash it into a mountain on his maiden flight with all his cronies.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 48 points 2 months ago (2 children)

According to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, trump doesn't qualify to be ~~king~~ president. Everyone grasping at The Constitution to save them, but that ship has long since sailed.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 25 points 2 months ago (3 children)

It's frustrating. He's done more than enough to get rid of him multiple times over and nothing has happened yet, but they're all still checking the laws with every new bullshit thing he does. Fucking why? You didn't do anything the thousand other times he blatantly broke the fucking law.

[–] cuteness@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Because Biden was a coward.

Trump has done many things against the emoluments clause. It doesn't matter.

The people are stupid and put corrupt/stupid people in charge. It's going to take smart people a lot more time and effort to restore basic sanity in a system that's being tested non-stop.

This sounds horrible for security. Yeah, let's accept a new Air Force One from a shady foreign state. Surely it's completely safe and not wired at all.

[–] cuteness@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

The very same foreign government who hacked Jeff Bezos phone and assassinated a US citizen. Both of which happened during Trumps first term.

[–] LorIps@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (5 children)

No it isn't? That was Saudi Arabia. And Khashoggi wasn't a citizen, just a green card holder. Qatar is mostly known for harbouring the leadership of Hamas

[–] viking@infosec.pub 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And exploiting Indian, Nepalese and Bangladeshi workers for ridiculous high risk construction sites.

I'm gonna cackle if this turns out to be a five-d chess move from the Qataris to make sure they can kill the US president whenever they want.

What's another crime in the pile? Start reporting the legal things he does.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 22 points 2 months ago

Conservatism explained as "there must be out-groups to bind and in-groups to protect" is pretty good, but someone recently said it's just "what's good for me and mine right now?". Similar idea, different angle. I think this explains much.

Conservatives don't care about hypocrisy because it doesn't enter into "what's good for me and mine right now?" Pointing out that they're being a hypocrite matters as much as someone saying to you "Your sentence wasn't alphabetical". It's just not a thing they care about, just like you typically don't think about the ordering of your words.

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

The autopilot is programmed to hit Pentagon if he steps out of line

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The entire American political structure functions on bribes, lol, they've just legalized most ways and barely hide it when they haven't. Haven't you heard? American politicians are "transactional" in nature.

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

True, but Bob Menendez was found guilty only recently for a far smaller amount. This is several orders of magnitude more expensive

Let's see ol Donny wriggle his way out of this one

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

I bet it’s at least 1% espionage bugs by weight.

[–] CascadeOfLight@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

Oh right, the clause, the foreign emoluments clause, the foreign emoluments clause written to prevent exactly this, the clause on foreign emoluments... that clause?

[–] Guamer@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

lol not even gonna let future presidents use it

[Insert joke about how there won't be future presidents here]

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Trump just whips out SCOTUS’ presidential immunity ruling. Proof he has no intent of leaving office alive.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They better have that shit filled to the brim with explosives, and the ability to remote crash or at any time

Honestly, if there's one royal family that I wish had a little more influence over US politics, it's the Qataris. Still doesn't bode well how openly corrupt he is, as stupid as he is it does show how confident they are that no one will stop them.
