John Ullyot, who resigned last week as chief Pentagon spokesperson, predicted that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth will also be out of a job soon.

Ullyot called it a “strange and baffling purge” that has led to “a near collapse inside the Pentagon’s top ranks.”

And he warned that even more “bombshell” stories about Hegseth and the Defence Department are about to drop.

( Ullyot )“President Donald Trump has a strong record of holding his top officials to account,” he wrote. “Given that, it’s hard to see Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth remaining in his role for much longer.”

That line was near the end of the article and puts the whole thing into absolute hogwash territory

[–] MirthfulAlembic@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure this is just how people try to manipulate Trump. He responds to flattery, and this almost makes it sound like Trump would be weak to do nothing.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's worth noting that what you said is the only way this guy is going to get fired. Trump has literally zero intrinsic understanding of the issue. He doesn't use computers or smartphones, probably has only a vague grasp of what an app or end-to-end encryption are, and no understanding of app security vs device security. He has literally no basis on which to understand any of this, and crucially, he won't care to learn if someone explains it to him.

So yeah I have no doubt that he's completely baffled by all of this and doesn't really see how it affects him.

[–] snapoff@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’d always assumed he used a smart phone to tweet? Or post to whatever social media?

[–] TehWorld@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

So you’re saying that signal is like the tweeter thing? Why would Trump fire someone for using something like that? Also where are those hamberders I ordered!!!

He's trying to stroke his ego

[–] vegeta@lemmy.world 140 points 3 days ago (3 children)

At least he didn’t wear a tan suit whilst eating grey poupon.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

God remember when he invited the man who was wrongfully arrested for breaking into his own home, over to the Whitehouse for a beer???

Were they even wearing suits?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 23 points 3 days ago

Didn’t even say thank you.

[–] IMALlama@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Better still, he invited the home owner and the arresting officer over:

On July 24, Obama invited both parties to the White House to discuss the issue over a beer, and on July 30, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden joined Crowley and Gates in a private, cordial meeting in a courtyard near the White House Rose Garden; this became known colloquially as the "Beer Summit".

“President Donald Trump has a strong record of holding his top officials to account,” he wrote

Sorry, what?

[–] IAmJacksRage@lemm.ee 67 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It means he fires them if they disagree with him. It checks out.

[–] blacklisted@lemmy.org 23 points 3 days ago

Exactly. They are being held accountable for being sycophants, nothing else.

I still have not made up my mind....
Is all of this because all of them are incredibly stupid OR is this by design, is all of this intentional.

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 75 points 3 days ago

It's all intentionally incredibly stupid by design!

[–] Wazowski@lemmy.world 58 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Both. They’re fucking morons, manipulated according to the design of smarter men who wish us ill.

When it's not working, it's working. The destruction of American military might was the objective from the start. Just look at who benefits the most by this.

It's Putin. Its always Putin, using Skum and HitlerPig as his muscle.

When will people truly internalize that the two biggest foreign Sociopathic Oligarchs, have partnered up with the most prolific traitor in American history? None of them have any loyalty or patriotism toward America, and only see us as a big, rich, fat, lazy target to be ruthlessly exploited and looted, and it's happening in real time before our eyes.

All they care about is money, and either Putin is paying them directly out of the Russian Treasury (HitlerPig would rape and murder his own mother for far less than a billion bucks, and Putin could order a lot more than that), or they've cut a deal to split the booty like the pirates they are.

He called himself a “strong backer” of Hegseth

If Ullyot backs Hegseth then I don’t give a shit about anything else he has to say. Hegseth’s end nearing at this point isn’t a bombshell or surprise.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I shouldn't be surprised that literally nobody knows how to read through political-speak or understands the game as it's being played.

It's not your fault, it's the goddamn waves and waves of bad-faith bots and shills who have infested every corner of the internet like fucking bedbugs, latching onto any minuscule term or word that could inflame strong feelings in either side of the political spectrum, and amplifying those things to the point of absurdity, so that our general population doesn't even try to understand things like political games or nuance or complex motivations.

This is what paved the way for our cartoonishly absurd "leadership" right now. They campaigned on face-value terms and ideas, the most superficial, black-and-white values. It's why our political landscape is at a point where people don't even attempt to debate each other anymore, because nobody listens to each other or even wants to understand each other. It's why we have to explain every little thing online in excruciating detail and with a mile of qualifiers and disclaimers. They have ruined our ability to understand anything past what we see, and as someone who lived in the before times, when there was no social media or internet at all, I can say with certainty that things are dramatically different now. People are different.

[–] gamer@lemm.ee 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I legit would feel a lot more comfortable about the national security of my country if the Pentagon were to require mandatory breathalyzer checks throughout the day for the leadership team.

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wish I had a thing that could make me feel better about the leadership of the country.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a burgeoning market just begging for someone to enter! And once you've built 2, call yourself the #1 guillotine manufacturer in the world, made with American lumber and steel (might have to laser etch a punisher logo on the blade). Then post on X about how your 100% American made guillotines aren't selling in high enough numbers. You'll have tariffs on foreign made guillotines by the end of the week!

This might just work. I'm in.

[–] rustyfish@lemmy.world 60 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Honestly, I wonder what these bombshells are supposed to be. The current administration goes with the worst possible scenario every single time.

It also doesn’t help, that they get away with it all the time.

First cunt is out and it's been under 100 days. The amount of infighting drama will only increase, and I wonder whether Trump will push Elona under the bus, too.

[–] skooma_king@lemm.ee 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Gearing up to drop the DOGE, possibly. Caught a ton of messages from the RNC in my organization’s email filter today with a survey asking if people still support DOGE. Sounds like a narrative change, but who knows could just be a dumb newsletter.

This Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth can't even name a single country in ASEAN. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I21TEL_ArPY

[–] boughtmysoul@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If only there had been signs.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

TBH, of all the unqualified and under qualified members of this cabinet, Hegseth has the be the most unqualified. I don’t know if Vegas has odds on which cabinet member goes first, but Drunk Pete has to have something close to 1:1.

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You forgot that he is also one of the most loyal to Trump. In this admin, loyalty is above all else. It doesn't matter how incompetent you are as long as you're loyal.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (3 children)

That’s a fair point, but if he messes up enough, and more importantly embarrassingly enough, the loyalty won’t matter. Can’t make the King(s) look bad.

I dunno. RFK is also a strong contender for that title.

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the list is just so fucking long

can we just try and name the most qualified, agree that they’re unqualified, label the rest as more than unqualified and call it a day?

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Trump's selection method was to find out who's the absolute worst candidate for each job, then to hire them. It's the dregs of the dregs.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

"Draining the swamp" into the cabinet.

As expected.

I tried reading the original opinion piece by John Ullyot, and god damn what a sad lackey. It was hard to read.
