They’re for a project I swear

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 41 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I totally haven’t renewed them year after year without any movement on that project

[–] elvith@feddit.org 17 points 10 months ago

I.... Feel called out

A single domain helps so much, regardless of what you have planned. I basically use mine just as bookmarks. There's a dedicated subdomain for dynamic DNS. I make use of SRV records. Costs me like 6 bucks a year. You don't need huge ambitions or dreams for a domain name to make sense.

[–] Bleys@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It’s just a joke reference to some people who hold onto a domain specifically for their pet project that they aren’t actively pursuing. I’m sure it doesn’t apply to everyone

[–] smee@poeng.link 4 points 10 months ago

My longest "I'll use that domain soon" was 1 1/2 years. I'm a lightweight.

[–] KiwiHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

I got my username because it was about £11 for 2 years, and by buying it through cloudflare I get tones of ways to access the stuff I self host.

At some point I plan on setting up a personal website.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 28 points 10 months ago

Don’t ask, not because it’s rude but because they honestly lost count years ago.

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We're really consuming them at an alarming rate. Soon, the only affordable ones will have either 20+ characters, a sus TLD, or just be a nonsensical string nobody can pronounce.

[–] GiveOver@feddit.uk 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The weird TLDs will just be normalised

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I sure hope so. Half of the Fediverse uses them. We don't want people thinking "no way I'm clicking sh.itjust.works"

[–] recklessengagement@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They're my emotional support domains

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

I put a hanging ball sack on mine. It makes me feel tough and special.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 8 points 10 months ago

I have zero, but within a few years, it may be one...

[–] Kidplayer_666@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago
  1. And a bajillion subdomains
[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago

That's funny, I was just looking up registering my first domain name for a project this morning.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 6 points 10 months ago

Zero, cuz they cost money and I don't earn my salary in USD

[–] dangling_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

And how many domain registers they have ;-;

[–] smee@poeng.link 3 points 10 months ago

Moving everything to one registrar was a pain but well worth it.

[–] Engywuck@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

For now, just 4...

[–] SilentObserver@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

Just one for me… for now.

[–] nichtburningturtle@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago

1 with many subdomains. But I intend to invest in a second one with my legal name, for more professional purposes.

[–] Johanno@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago

None because I use free ones.

Freedns is amazing. You can take a public one and have as many subdomains as you want. Even nested.

This.domain.is.also.possible.mooo.com

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

whoisearth.com - had for 20+ years. Personal sandbox

ifuckswithit.com

ifuckswiththat.com - both just general blogs

"Surname".com - I get my personal email and my kids all setup there

[–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

How did you setup your emai?

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago

I use dreamhost and it's just normal IMAP.

[–] jayb151@piefed.social 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Literally just bought 1 this month

[–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 2 points 10 months ago

I got three so far. Bought my first one as motivational commitment for a project, then came the second... And the third... And it'd be cool if I had a fourth one...

Actually, gimme a couple minutes

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 2 points 10 months ago
[–] zzx@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I have like 11...

[–] tyler@programming.dev 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah I lost count a while ago. It’s probably around 20, maybe less.

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

Zero duckdns has me covered

[–] Stupidmanager@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Heh, 18. Got some cool ones too

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 10 months ago

Like two dozen or more. I'm using exactly one for anything.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Or how many alt accounts a Lemming has. 👀
