Rare Apple W

An Apple spokeswoman blamed the issue on phonetic overlap between the two words, and said the company was working on a fix.

🤔

[–] regrub@lemmy.world 103 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe its because the word "rapist" sounds a lot like "racist".

[–] straightjorkin@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

This is such a funny lie, they aren't even the same number of syllables

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

she clearly has no idea how AI works

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Nor phonetics

This is the fun side of Apple. Since they're a monoculture, they can't just blame a partner or vendor like every other tech company. Watching them squirm is delightful. So arrogant and closed-source.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

They should just flex and own this one

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago

Interesting how you managed to spin their accountability as a bad thing. It sounds like you prefer companies that refuse to squirm.

The company said it is working to fix the issue...

What issue? It sounds like it works perfectly fine.

[–] dneaves@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Based siri lolol

Instead, he said, there was probably software code somewhere on Apple’s systems that caused iPhones to write the word “Trump” when someone said “racist.”

“This smells like a serious prank,” Mr. Burkey said. “The only question is: Did someone slip this into the data or slip into the code?”

yeah, I wouldn't read too much into it guys

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

Get Tim Apple on the phone.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Apple will comply and instead transcribe "winner" to "Trump" in order to curry favor with him. Just like they kowtow on the Gulf of Shame.

[–] eporetsky@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Not sure if this is relevant but would be interesting to see what words have high cosine similarity with "Trump" in different pre-trained LLMs

I'm not even mad... except for the NYT links without a paywall bypass link

[–] felixwhynot@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Use a archived version next time.

Clean, no ads, no silly restrictions.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

No. Do not share that site. It uses google scripts and can't be loaded in Tor Browser.

Just share an article from another news outlet that doesn't paywall.

Bug stories like this are covered by hundreds of outlets. Its not hard.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I had to try this and you appear to be correct.

Its kinda bizare i get a captcha which i cant enter without javascript but in firefox i dont get any captcha at all.

However i don’t think your solution is adequate. I don’t particularly care about this story i care about having to face a paywall every 3 times i click a link on lemmy.

Kinda sucks there are not more sites like it but i did successfully test this compromise: https://web.archive.org/web/20250226151151/https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/technology/iphone-dictation-trump-racist.html

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 4 points 2 weeks ago

If we just publish articles from one of the majority of news sites that dont have paywalls, there is no problems. Everyone can load it with one click.

We really should ban linking to the nyt
