This tree is absolutely massive, and is the largest Giant Sequoia outside of California. When last measured in 2012, it was 36.2 feet (11.04 meters) in girth.

If you didn't know Giant Sequoia grew in the PNW (and their cousins the coast redwood), they are planted in almost every city in the region.

Here's the link to this particular tree's profile at monumentaltrees.com: https://www.monumentaltrees.com/en/usa/washington/piercecounty/4830_jeffersonpark/

I'm not removing this because big ol trees make me happy and it doesn't break our commandments. From this day forward posts about non-cannabis trees will be allowed.

Shrubs on the other hand are bullshit, if you post a shrub you're getting a 3 day ban minimum.

It always made me smile when someone posted an actual tree to r/trees. I'm glad this joke made it over to Lemmy, and I'm glad you're still cool with the accidental oak or maple showing up here.

(Fuck them shrubs, though.)

Why not one step further and give c/trees back to the tree people? It always was a Reddit joke. Maybe Lemmy needs a new one?

Thanks for your suggestion but we'll probably keep it a cannabis-centric community

Lol, um, you know this sub isn't about those kind of trees 😅

Didn't even notice til I saw your comment 😆

OP seems to have confused this place with marijuana_enthusiasts!

[–] bran_buckler@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Does Lemmy have its own r/MarijuanaEnthusiasts sub equivalent?

Largest in the US? We have tons here in the UK imported by nobility hundreds of years ago that look bigger than this.

Largest giant sequoia outside of California, measured by diameter at breast height. It's in the title of the post you're commenting on. It has a girth of 36.2 ft.

The UK does have some chonky trees, tbf. Current girth champion appears to be the Marton oak with a girth of 47 ft. Historical champion was the Cowthorpe oak at 59 ft circumference.

In comparison, General Sherman has a girth of 102.6 ft, and there are many more sequioas in California of comparable size and even greater circumference.

That still doesn’t tell us if that’s the rest of the world, or just the USA.

It says it's the largest giant sequoia outside of California, so that claim would presumably apply to the US, the world, and indeed the known universe.

It’s a USA agency, to assume otherwise is quite strange. They cannot go out and check other nations trees. So unless they specify a claim, I like other non Americans would assume it to mean on US soil. The fact that you think otherwise is quite telling of American culture currently.

Giant sequioas are native to California. The fact that you are apparently offended that the largest giant sequioas are in the United States is quite bizarre and telling of your prejudiced attitude towards Americans. Maybe instead of blaming American culture for scientific facts, you should try doing some of your own research so you sound less ignorant and xenophobic.

Any giant sequioa that exists outside of America is almost certainly less than 200 years old, and thus unlikely to set any size records. The sequioa was first introduced to the UK in 1853. Additionally, it would stand to reason that sequioas would grow best in their native climates or similar conditions. This is why sequioas in the UK cannot naturally reproduce.

And yes, they actually can go out and check trees located in other countries, and I'm not sure what makes you think otherwise 😅

TIL trees have breasts…?
