Apparently unrelated to her divorce-- from an interview with GQ:

In this moment, I say, it is impossible not to think of a particular Nicole Kidman meme (of which there are many): she’s probably in her early 30s, and she’s standing on the pavement in a pink top, basking in the sunlight, her eyes closed, her arms out, her mouth open as if she’s letting out a deep sigh of relief. Does she know the one I’m talking about?

“Yes,” she says. “That was not me; that was from a film, that wasn’t real life. I know that image!”

The story that goes with this meme whenever it circulates is that Kidman had just left her lawyer’s office after the dissolution of her first marriage. “That’s not true,” she laughs.

"a film".

Wouldn't it be trivially easy to confirm what film it is from the setting? It's not like she starred in 7563 movies...

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 35 points 2 months ago

Not everything shot for a film gets used. The director might say, "let's reshoot the scene with wardrobe B" and then you have a new take with a different outfit.

Simple scenes like that often take a few days of work to dial in just right. Or sometimes it's done with a single take and everyone feels vaguely off about it until they see the edit.

[–] lemmyman@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But that would require watching movies with Nicole Kidman in them

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Start with Dogville if you really don't like her.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s rare that reading the wiki page for a movie does psychic damage and makes me want to see it

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 months ago

Then it accurately represents von Trier's movie style.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 5 points 2 months ago

That's... Pretty fucked up to suggest in that context.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

I liked that movie and her in it but it needed to be like an hour shorter... 3 hours felt overly indulgent.

[–] CptLawnChair@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Thanks for making me laugh like an idiot in public

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 104 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Obligatory, fuck Tom Cruise.

"They're the same image"

[–] dwindling7373@feddit.it 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's what she said, for a while.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

And then 1 final time

[–] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 months ago

That's the weird Scientology guy, right?

[–] ngn@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)
[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 48 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Other people have already mentioned scientology, so I'll add this.

[–] ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's been said a woman's eyes don't fully open until she turns 33

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

You're thinking of kittens and puppies and it's usually like a couple of weeks.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why are the years in feet?

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It probably annotates abbreviation of the full year 1985 1986 1987, etc, so people don't get confused and think Tom Cruise was 87 when he married Mimi Rogers.

I can't say if it's a good or bad annotation, but theres a possible explanation.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

But don’t you put that on the left, to replace the “19” or “20”?

[–] jdeath@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

yeah whomever made this just put them on the wrong side

[–] TheRealKuni@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Just to be pedantic, you should use “whoever” there, not “whomever.”

To tell whether to use “who” or “whom,” replace it with “he” or “him” and follow the ‘m.’

“he made this” vs “him made this”

[–] AppaYipYip@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Omg thank you for this!!! I never understood when whom would ever be used!!

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Can I get an example for whomever please? My brain is slow today but like learning new grammar tips.

[–] TheRealKuni@midwest.social 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Sure!

“If I’m asked, I’ll give grammar tips to whomever.”

Whomever is tough, because often this would be constructed as “I’ll give grammar tips to whoever asks.” And you would use “who” there, because “whoever” is the subject of the clause “whoever asks.”

Generally speaking, it’s usually safe to pick “whoever” over “whomever.”

But if you drop the “-ever” it’s a lot easier. Anywhere you’d use “him” (that is, the objective pronoun), you use “whom.” To whom, for whom, by whom, etc.

Thanks. This is amazing and just what I needed to understand the differences. Appreciate you taking the time.

I went down a rabbit hole on this one. I think the age may be irrelevant, or only correlated with children. At least Kidman and Holmes left him over Scientology. They were trying to avoid having their kids indoctrinated. That worked for Holmes, backfired on Kidman. It might have worked for Holmes because it backfired on Kidman. https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/06/28/after-tom-cruise-once-denied-abandoning-suri-she-seems-to-get-the-last-word/

Does Leonardo get the same hate?

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 months ago

yes frequently

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Leonardo DiCaprio? I don't know much about him. If you mean the young girlfriend/partners, those are transactional relationships. He gets arm candy and they get access to high level producers and directors at parties. I feel like it's much more honest and safe that they aren't married to him.

[–] Gingernate@programming.dev 7 points 2 months ago

Yes he does haha

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 2 months ago

Yeah and work with the US military to make movies that advertise for them.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 43 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Tom Cruise and Elon Musk have the same energy.

[–] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 39 points 2 months ago (2 children)

At least cruise learned to shut the fuck up and stay in his lane

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 13 points 2 months ago

He learned to live life secure in the knowledge that he can have his enemies killed without destroying democracy.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Did he, tho? Seems like he's continuing to be a strong vector for Scientology in Hollywood to this day.

[–] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago

Haven't heard a peep about him and scientology since scary movie clowned on him in like 2006

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Fun fact, Christian Bale based his portrayal of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho on Tom Cruise.

[–] Theonetheycall1845@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

You're right. That IS a fun fact.

[–] Jericho_Kane@lemmy.org 15 points 2 months ago

I'd look like that too if i went from stupit rich to mega stupid rich
