You should look up the disposal guidelines for sharp objects for your area

No need to slice up a sanitation worker's hands for no reason

I dump all of mine at the beach when I take my old car batteries to feed the eels

[–] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 34 points 11 months ago

Oh you’re where we get all the sea glass from

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 17 points 11 months ago

dead-dove-2 What it's something really good but with a disguised label

my local recycling place doesn't take glass angery

[–] TomBombadil@hexbear.net 27 points 11 months ago

Whaaa that's insane. Glass is a classico style recyclable

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 32 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Yeah I picked it up from my grandmother. Broken glass goes into a marked container so the trash bros don't get hurt. I don't know if the trash bros actually see it though since it's in a bag.

never thought of doing this but its pretty based actually

Death to America

[–] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 27 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I do this for the sanitation workers. Dumpster divers are just a bonus I suppose.

[–] Chronicon@hexbear.net 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

yeah this is pretty real, especially with recycling where there's more likely to be human intervention in processing that stream. I knew someone who worked in one of those places. It was a "here's some inadequate PPE but the job is unachievable if you actually wear it all, you'll get used to all the broken glass and needles" situation

Yes, chemistry class taught me to

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 19 points 11 months ago

if I see a box like this I'm assuming it has treasure and immediately shoveling it's contents into my mouth without checking it first

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 17 points 11 months ago

That dude searching for his bitcoin hard drive will appreciate your consideration

[–] D61@hexbear.net 13 points 11 months ago

If I can't take it to the recycling center, for whatever reason, yeah. Sometimes I've taken two strips of duct tape and sandwiched the shards between them when I didn't have a box or small plastic bottle/tub to use.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 13 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah I do, in a bag or sth but not loose. Never thought about it for the dumpster divers but for the guys who have to throw those bags around. But here it's recyclable

I also wrap razor blades in cardboard

[–] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 11 months ago

It's good practice.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think glass goes in the recycling and the recycling centres don't like it when you put stuff in other containers

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I googled.

Recycle Coach

The bottom line is that recycling companies do not accept broken container glass.

Ninja edit. I just realized it's surely US only info. Other places? I have no idea

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 3 points 11 months ago

Hmm, maybe they do want box glass. I'll check, its something that rarely comes up (I usually have cans)

[–] chickentendrils@hexbear.net 8 points 11 months ago

I do but I don't label it. I guess anybody going thru my trash should mind any taped up boxes that sounds like there's a bunch of broken glass inside

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

yes but I do wonder if it really matters

where I am all the recycling is mechanically dumped into a truck with enough force that there is no way that a significant amount of the glass isn't broken by the process

[–] toys_are_back_in_town@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago (4 children)

while we're on this topic what the fuck do you do with the tops of cans? that shits sharp af, i try to leave them attached/bent in so theyre not just like loose ninja stars but surely they break off... sorry to anyone who has to deal with garbage i genuinely dunno wtf to do

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Put em back into the can when I've emptied it. If I'm at a place that gets emptied rarely then I also stomp the cans flat

[–] toys_are_back_in_town@hexbear.net 2 points 11 months ago

oh, (carefully) stomping them is a good idea, i try not to deform them because i have no idea how they get the labels off but idk if it matters

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Get a different can opener. They make them now that don't leave sharp edges at all.

[–] toys_are_back_in_town@hexbear.net 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I was thinking about ring-pulls though. As my fingers can attest, those are plenty sharp and I often think they must present a hazard to disposal workers but idk what to do about it

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago

Ah yeah, I see. I just cram them back into the can, fwiw.

[–] Nacarbac@hexbear.net 2 points 11 months ago

I just use my safe can opener on those as well, works fine. It uses pressure to split the rolled over seam around the edge, so it doesn't matter too much what kinda can it is.

[–] DamarcusArt@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 11 months ago

Usually I put them back in the can and then bend the lid so they can't fall out.

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You put them in the metal recycling with the rest of the can.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago

yeah. got in the habit at work when we have to sweep up broken glass to protect the maintenance worker when they take out the trash

thought there's a good chance someone is handling the municipal waste too although i think it's just cubed and dumped into a landfill by a truck. but you never know

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago

Usually, but sometimes a random mess has me forgetting in the moment.

[–] Dyno@hexbear.net 5 points 11 months ago

in my area we have a separate tub for glass, and it doesn't get collected, we just fill it then take it to the recycling centre where there's a bottle bank or a bin for broken glass

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 5 points 11 months ago

You could try leaving your broken glass near your local police station

I just wrap shit like that in paper before binning it, more so at work where its more likely someone'll dig through the bin

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 5 points 11 months ago

I thought you were supposed to label it sharps. It's too bad my house doesn't have a sharps disposal slot (hole in wall) and I don't want to add one.

[–] BlackDragon@hexbear.net 4 points 11 months ago

Well I've never thought about that before but I will in the future.
