Image is of a colectivo: an armed group, usually operating in impoverished areas, which act to support and defend the socialist government of Venezuela. They are often derided as vigilante terrorist groups which prop up the government, because cops are only bad when they are socialist and not murdering minorities, I suppose.

Maduro's party, the PSUV, has won the election after a staggering amount of propaganda by the opposition, who said their polls suggested they were going to win and that Maduro's loss was inevitable. The reaction across Latin America is what one would expect. Left-leaning leaders are generally respecting the results and congratulating Maduro, while those on the right and/or are US puppets (such as in semirecently-couped Peru) are calling for recounts, or even that the election was illegitimate. The US itself is also unhappy about the results. We shall soon see if their unhappiness boils over into yet another coup attempt.

Personally, I think they should have ran Guaido again.

guaido-despair guaido

Thank you to @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net for the election coverage here, and everything else they do in the news megathread.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

The municipal government of Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, has decided to suspend a social educator named Simon el-Zinaib as a result of an Arab-language Facebook post in which he expressed sorrow over the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh who was murdered by a zionist terror attack in Iran.

In the post el-Zinaib referred to Haniyeh as a "great leader" and expressed the wish for Allah to accept him among the martyrs. The post has since been removed by the US-government affiliated platform, citing alleged violations of guidelines.

Public uproar has already pressured el-Zinaib to resign from the national integration council where he has been advising the regime on integration of ethnic minorities. Kaare Dybvad, the virulently anti-immigrant head of the nation's succdem-controlled ministry for foreigners and integration appointed el-Zinaib but has now made statements about how he condemns the statements and how "prising the leader of a terrorist organisation" is irreconcilable with serving on the integration council.

In Aarhus Anders Winneskjold, head of the city's succdem-controlled social affairs and employment department, is equally brash, claiming that such statements are "incompatible" with working for the city. He refuses to make further comments, referring to the now-initiated legal process to fire el-Zinaib.

Prior to being thrown out, el-Zinaib was working in a poor immigrant neighbourhood of Aarhus doing crime prevention.

US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Lloyd Austin, some UK Labour party person (don't remember who) all unanimously and vociferously talking about how Iran and Hezbollah must be condemned and must not retaliated right now. And emphasizing the obviously Israeli attack on those Druze children. I think they are expecting Iran will retaliate hard and expecting to use that to escalate.

I am starting to change my mind that the US actually DOES want this to escalate. Biden is out to lunch, Blinken now is in full control of US policy now, and I think he is ready to go.

Mexican President (Still AMLO) condemns OAS's interfering attitude in Venezuela - TelesurSpanish (Translated)

Article

López Obrador asserted that it is necessary for all countries to respect Venezuela's autonomy.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned this Tuesday during his morning conference at the National Palace the interfering attitude of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Venezuela's internal affairs.

López Obrador affirmed “the OAS has to get involved. That is interference, that is why the OAS has no credibility”. The Mexican president asked: “On what grounds does the OAS maintain that the other candidate won? Where is the evidence?

Likewise, he urged to respect the self-determination of the peoples, to avoid violent demonstrations and to stop political incitement.

In this sense, he referred to international actors, internationalist experts and advisors, and stressed that each country is free, independent and sovereign.

The Head of State criticized the hypocrisy of former Presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, who opposed the recount of votes in Mexico and are now “international observers”.

All Latin American nations should leave the OAS and strengthen CELAC.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will have a telephone conversation with his counterparts from Brazil and Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, about the situation in Venezuela, without interference and respecting the self-determination of the people. Something that the OAS did not do, he stated.

Claudia also repeated what AMLO said about the OAS and Venezuela.

Amal Saad:

How might Hizbullah and the Resistance Axis respond to Israel's new targeted shock and awe campaign, or what Nasrallah has called the "new phase" of the war?

An analysis of the possible retaliation will be shaped in large part by what the Axis believes Israel's aims are, and the extent of US support for these aims. In other words, whether Israel is simply trying to intimidate and coerce its enemies into submission with these very provocative assassinations, or if its trying to bait Hizbullah and Iran into a wider regional war with the aim of forcing the US to step in militarily. Given that their previous deterrence strategies are no longer effective, both Iran and Hizbullah have to go beyond their responses to the attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria and the assassination of al-Arouri, respectively. This entails an abandonment of their signature "sub-threshold" response, and the adoption of a vertical escalation strategy that crosses Israel's red lines forcefully, compelling it to redraw those lines and absorb the counter-strike(s), without triggering an all-out war.

Anything less than this will only embolden Israel to escalate horizontally by striking Dahyeh and Tehran regularly. This could potentially be achieved if the response doesn't target heavily populated areas and civilians (not to be confused with civilian objects), which Hizbullah has been keen to avoid since the start of the war, despite its public rhetoric. For Hizbullah, the real challenge will engaging in such a response while avoiding giving away any new weapons technology, and the location of its missiles and launching positions, among other things, which Israeli intelligence is keen to observe and gather information about. The central aim of any response will not only be to restore deterrence and honour as per Nasrallah's speech, and to prevent all out war, but to ensure that Israel is unable to compensate for its lack of strategic victory with tactical gains.

The mystery of Argentina’s gold: Milei admits that it was transferred abroad, without specifying the quantities or destination (Jul 28)

While the government acknowledges that gold reserves have been sent outside the country, there’s no official information available regarding the purpose of the operation. The gold is now exposed to the risk of being seized, due to long-standing claims against Argentina made by foreign creditors

The self-proclaimed DICTATOR of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, described the results issued by the CNE as a “fraud” that has “no relation with reality”. “We broke diplomatic relations with Maduro 4 years ago. We will not reopen them until his people can elect their leaders in real elections”, expressed the president in his X account.

Dude says this shit without any irony lol

Israel’s armed forces confirmed that they killed Hamas’s military commander, Muhammad Deif, in an air strike on Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza, in July. Mr Deif was responsible for orchestrating the militant group’s attacks that killed nearly 1,200 Israelis on October 7th. The announcement comes a day after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s political leader, in Iran. Yoav Gallant, Israel’s defence minister, claimed that Mr Deif’s death showed that Israel was “achieving the goals of the war”.

This is from the Economist. Another assassination. Been some serious killings, attempted and successful, over the past few days.

Nicolas Maduro said he was willing to return to dialogue with the United States government, if "popular sovereignty was respected", and if the country "stopped threatening Venezuela", and "Qatar's commitment" was fulfilled.

President Maduro speech today: "We have defeated the first part of the criminal fascist coup d'état. Let's go for them and fascism in Venezuela will not pass! I will protect the people, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood, from the fascists, murderers, country sellers and imperialists."

Nicolas Maduro announces that maximum security prisons will be set up for people who are at opposition protests, which will serve as re-education centers for opponents.

Maria Corina Machado, opposition leader, called on Venezuelans to gather in the streets this Saturday, August 3rd, to "show the strength of the people".

I guess Gonzalez is already out of the picture? Maybe he already went to Argentina or Miami.

First sleepless night with three weeks old lil Hassan yesterday, stayed up until 6 am with him crying in my lap while I was focusing on nuking America in my Civ 6 game. That mf Roosevelt had better progress on his science victory, so I had to do it.

To keep it news-mega related, lots of movement on the Ukrainian front recently. Russians have crossed the canal into the real parts of Chasov Yar, captured the main part of Krasnogorovka, and they've also initiated a mini-collapse west of Prohres in Avdeevka - Pokrovsk front. Away from the Donbass, they've also broken through the Oskil stalement front that has been dead since September 2022, with a big push beyond the village of Pishchane. Lots of new names for us village name-enjoyers, they're finally moving fast enough for a healthy learning pace. Gone are the days where of being stuck in fucking Opytne, Marinka and Yahidne. I'm personally waiting for a real push on Ugledar, hate that place so much. The Ukrainian strategy on the Avdeevka - Pokrovsk front is completely incomprehensible to me, they keep trying to set up makeshift defences in every village as they keep getting pushed back, which has resulted in full brigades getting chewed up in indefensible locations. Like what's the damn point, the Russians proved in Robotyne and Svatove that a fixed line is way more defensible and saves so many lives, and even Ukraine themselves proved this recently in Kharkov and in Ugledar before that. Instead they're doing this strategy where they're losing both lives and ground, when they could've saved some lives that are desperately needed with the manpower issues.

It's been raining all day in Caracas. If you've seen any protest videos alleging to be from today in which it's not raining, they are using old footage.

As of right now (3:54 PM) there have been a few small protests around the city. There could be more when the full results are announced. But there are also old videos being misrepresented in bad faith on the social media networks.

Recently, Danish authorities began employing teenagers as "agents" to check whether retailers were selling alcohol to minors. Naturally, retailers are grumpy about this impediment to the free flow of commerce but "I want to make money by getting minors drunk" is not a good PR message so they had to come up with something else. And this is what they came up with: The enforcement of the age limits is making their employees sad and scared, sometimes to a degree in which they have to call in sick or go into therapy.

Won't somebody think of the poor employees who now have to ask young people for ID before handing them a bottle of vodka?

Venezuela's Army backs the Goverment

Venezuela's defense minister, Padrino Lopez, has aligned himself with the Nicolás Maduro goverment and said that the country is undergoing an attempted coup d'état perpetrated by fascists.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López issued a statement condemning "violent actions" promoted by the Venezuelan far-right yesterday. Mentioned 23 servicemen and 25 police officers wounded, as well as the death of a National Guard Sargent who was shot.

In his press conference, Padrino said Venezuela is facing a coup attempt orchestrated by the far-right and vowed it would be defeated

Norway's succdem-led regime is trying a novel method to raise declining birth rates: Improving material conditions for families.

Preschool childcare rates will be lowered from USD 275 to USD 183 per month. In municipalities with low birth rates the rates will be halved. Norwegian parents are already only required to pay for the care of their first two children.

Ibrahim Traore on establishing a new national bank:
https://xcancel.com/CapitaineIb226/status/1819314679392469144

This Friday, August 2, 2024, I officially launched the activities of the Banque des Dépôts du Trésor.

With integrity as its compass, this bank is a tool and a symbol of economic and financial sovereignty of Burkina Faso. It will be closer to the populations and will contribute to the socio-economic development of our country through a more adapted method of financing structuring projects and programs.

I invite the Burkinabè, public and private development organizations and economic operators to use the “Burkindlim” bank to participate in the work of collective construction of a sovereign economy serving the development of our country.

Great success at the Banque des Dépôts du Trésor!
