What's wild to me is how most news sources are reporting that the president's rivals did their part by opting not to provide support to the coup attempt.

I think, if a bunch of armed rednecks attacked the White House, we wouldn't see solidarity among rival factions in defending our seat of government.

Republicans opposed January 6th until they realized that there would be no real repercussions for the organizers and traitors behind the scenes.

Huh. I was wondering why I read about it once and then completely forgot about it. I actually have no idea if this was a good thing or a bad thing tbh so I don't have an opinion

To remove all of the nuance: The democratically elected president survived an attempted overthrow from the military. He did so by:

  1. Replacing three military branch leaders who then ordered the military personnel to return to their barracks and stations.

  2. Reaching out to the citizens, who reacted quickly and without any signs of weakness to form mobs who surrounded and shouted at troops belonging to the coup.

The timeline was something like: Coup begins quietly, Coup leader Zuniga claimed to be "trying to restore democracy" at 2:47 AM, and Zuniga was arrested at 5:08 AM for the crime.

I thought Zuniga was a part of the white supremacy faction in Bollivia but I'm not finding any connections with a search engine. Looks like Juan Jose Zuniga was accused of embezzling ~400,000 USD worth of public funds and was part of a group, Pachajchos, who watched over coca production and monitored politics. Morales accused the group of trying to assassinate him.

On the flip side, Morales was and may still be seeking a 4th or 5th term as president, he was ousted in 2019 and replaced by democratically elected Arce. So being opposed to Morales doesn't seem like a bad thing on its own. Zuniga claims that a group of elites were destroying the nature and taking everything for themselves.

My best educated guess is that Zuniga is an opportunist who saw a fractured federal entity and wanted to wedge himself in the gap as its new leader, no matter how many lives he would need to throw on the fire in order to do so.
