I cannot tell you how embarrassingly long it took me to realize that "MILF" stood for "Mother {I'd Like to Fuck|R E L A T I V E C L A U S E}" rather than "{Mother|V O C A T I V E}, I'd Like to Fuck"

Hey, don't "bruh" me, my original interpretation actually made MORE sense if you don't think about it too hard!

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

Wait until you hear about DILF

What the fuck is this markdown witchcraft

Ruby characters, or furigana!

Ruby characters are primarily intended to be used for showing the pronunciations of Chinese characters ({汉|hàn}{字|zì} / {漢|かん}{字|じ}), but there is absolutely nothing stopping you from using ruby characters for whatever you like, as indeed many manga and occasionally anime often do. Seriously, if you watch anime, keep your eyes out for furigana! I can name several examples of interesting uses of furigana in manga and anime off the top of my head.

In HTML, ruby characters are written as hàn; Lemmy added support for ruby characters I think in late 2023, and their markdown is quite simply {汉|hàn}. In the above comment, however, I decided to put spaces between all the letters in "RELATIVE CLAUSE" and "VOCATIVE" such that the letters would be evenly spread out, as otherwise it comes out as "{I'd like to fuck|RELATIVE CLAUSE}" where the words are just too far spaced out and it doesn't look good, or "{I'd like to fuck|RELATIVE-CLAUSE}" where there's too much empty space to the sides and it doesn't look good either.

Well now i'm using it to add notes to shitlib news I post. Like here: https://hexbear.net/comment/4820709

I'm sure I'll find other fun ways to use this

Cool, a new way to indicate {tangents|my unending autistic} without breaking up the flow of the sentence.

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Hell yeah baby

[–] Owl@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's a genuinely cool way to misuse those. I can see them being used as a whole new way to {communicate|shitpost}.

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Might've looked better to write it as {communicate|⠀⠀S H I T P O S T⠀⠀}

If you space out the letters, you can use the Unicode character "Braille Pattern Blank" (⠀, U+2800) to adjust the character width by copying it on either side of the gloss: {communicate|⠀⠀S H I T P O S T⠀⠀}

[–] edge@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Oh cool, I didn’t know there was Markdown for that.

Are you either Sigmund Freud or Jim Morrison?

The guy from The Doors? Is he known for some sort of Oedipus complex thing?

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Also cause mythology guy here, Oedipus gets a bad rap. It's not a story about a dude who wants to fuck his mom, quite the opposite, some seer or whatever predicts hes gonna so he travels as far as possible from his parents, starts a new life elsewhere, marries a MILF and then it turns out she is in fact his real mom and he was adopted. It's a you can't escape your fate story not a dude wants to nail his mom story.

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Nonetheless the complex got stuck with his name because that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

I feel the need to defend the guy regardless. He went through enough

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

There's a whole thing about the lyrics to The End

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

It does mean that first one for Mike Pence
