Did a quick Tolkein nerd canon review and while there's nothing inherently contradictory, squirrels are a bit more vicious than you may imagine. I've seen them eat baby birds out of their nests, it's grotesque and just today on a smoke break I saw an acorn drop from a tree and a squirrel on the ground barely miss getting squashed by a car getting it. I gave the squrriel a talking to and then looked the branch the acorn fell from and there was another squirrel on it. That was attempted murder with malice aforethought in any court of law.
