I’m actually being sincere with this question, what do you learn? I imagine it’s not the same thing as getting an economics degree so, like, what classes are you taking? The actuaries and accounting people study mathematics so I just can’t connect the dots here, what are they doing?

actuaries and accounting people study mathematics

This is not true for accounting at all

They do not and I know this from experience. Everyone always says “oh you’re in accounting so you must be good at math” and it’s so wrong. All of the math is basic operations with little complex amortization. It is just the application of rules to know when and to what extent something gets added or subtracted. The rest of it is understanding both sides of double entry accounting and that a balance sheet needs to balance.

For business school generally they teach you that you are a master of the universe with special gifts and power to change things and do stuff. They really inflate egos with the finance, economics and management courses. Like everything important is already quantified and categorized and segmented.

The reality is that it is a place to become acculturated into a jargony world of abstractions and to network with people whose disdain for ethics (usually a required course) is always in plain view.

Accounting did help me understand Marx though so I’ll give it that and it was that “concreteness” that led me to pursue instead of Econ or finance
