Just reminding everyone that Neil Gaiman is a serial rapist. Please do not financially support his work. As painful as that is for me.
With this mindset, you might as well stop engaging with any art out there. In fact, you should stop using theories and philosophical ideologies. Stop buying clothes and stop eating food because you are 100% supporting someone who's a bad person by living and engaging with the world.
All this purity bs is so draining. One can like a work of art without agreeing with the person who made it.
You can watch coraline without supporting neil gaiman. It's pretty easy in todays world, but be careful, because you're probably currently using a phone or a computer that was manufactures by very evil people who are using child labor and are exploiting the earth's resources and possibly also raped somebody at some point.
Don't get vaccinated either or visit a doctor because you never know what evil person or company benefits from your wish to stay healthy.
From an extremely macro perspective, I can almost see your points, but frankly this just reads to me as “morality is hard, so it’s not even worth trying.” This isn’t about virtue signaling, it’s about whether or not you’re okay with financially supporting rapists.
Everyone can make their own decisions, and what art to consume is super-personal to begin with. But for a person like Neil Gaiman it’s a little more cut and dry, for me at least. I used to be a huge fan, I read most of his books. But I can’t pick up his work anymore without feeling physically ill. He was a beloved author for decades, he wrote strong and complex female characters, and seemingly espoused tolerance and understanding, but it turns out he is probably a serial rapist.
I suggest reading the detailed allegations in the victims’ words, they’re horrific.
