God that scene pissed me off. Superbutt could have just breathed out and altered the course just enough but nooooo. No one would have even noticed. What a dumbass. Too dumb to live.

The type of loss is important. The original version was Pa Kent dying from a heart attack or stroke or similar.

This teaches Clark the important lesson that despite all his power, there are people he cannot save. He decides to try anyway.

That scene teaches the exact opposite lesson. That having the power to save someone doesn't mean you should.

Later in the movie Superman kills thousands of people in order to murder one guy.

You know, instead of being seen day in and out saving people from the everyday dangers of living in a city. Gaining a groundswell of acceptance as the elite "Lex Luthor" plot his destruction.
