Imagine Dragons. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is:

They picked up hate for being marketed like they're some kind of super hard rock, even though they're not. But their music is good for the genre it is. The lead singer was raised Mormon, but is now an activist for LGBT youth.

I've got to disagree with this one. Imagine Dragons was synthesized in a lab to be as corporate sounding as possible. The lead singer especially is grating. It's exactly the singing style that Ai would come up with. That's not a random comment, I know because old people show me shitty Ai songs on a regular basis and they sound like Imagine Dragons.

i think they picked up the hate for being played everywhere and a lot of their songs sound the same. Interesting lore on the lead singer, that does make me like them more

[–] KRAW@linux.community 21 points 1 day ago

I always thought it was because they essentially pioneered the "rock music for commercials" genre

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That thunder song was legitimately terrible.

Cutthroat is tge worst aong ever recorded.

[–] Delphia@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I didnt know who that was... Now I hate Imagine Dragons.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

I think it was ACDC, and there's a drinking game that goes with it

[–] northernlights@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't like them because there's no singer, just a guy screaming in an auto tune cranked to 10.

I can guarantee with as corporate and overproduced as that shit is they 100% use autotune. When you do it right you can't tell. I use it in my home studio even, most songs use it across all genres.

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

It's difficult to autotune screaming and sound that good. As a Windmill scene fan, the problem with Imagine Dragons is not the vocals (the lead has awesome technical abilities); it's the lack of a point.

[–] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

what on earth does any of this mean?

what is a Windmill scene and what do you mean by lack of a pint? like a pint of beer? they would be better if they were drunk?

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I swear I ninja-edited it to "point". "Windmill scene" you can search up; it's not too easy to describe. Some call it "crank wave"? Some call it art punk.

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I did some research and it looks like they do on some and don't on others which is about as milquetoast as I'd expect from them

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Could you elaborate on which songs they use autotune on? Other than whatever "Thunder" is.
