I have spent very less time on Debian compared to others on this thread. So I'm not very qualified to speak about this topic.

My silly observations

  • No snap/Canonical nonsense. I don't hate snap, but it's not compatible with my workflow.
  • Overall lesser number of processes OOTB compared to Ubuntu. So I can quickly find out if there is a stray process running via htop.
  • Terminal operation/reboot seems way faster
  • Slower update frequency, so no random feature changes
  • Less RAM/disk requirement (Important in the post AI world)

Some quirks when coming from Ubuntu

  • No sudo! You either have to install sudo/sudo-rs/doas. I went with doas
  • Debian manages network differently (Not netplan)
  • Lack of support from Nvidia if you work with AI. I don't, so not a problem.

If you need to deploy a server with mainly docker workloads, just go with Debian. I have one last remaining Ubuntu server which I'll replace one day.
