The Earth was actually a cube, but the corners were cut off to create the Greater Pyramids of the, uh, Shrieking Bird Men. After they left the Earth to explore the cosmos, natural, scientific, processes of erosion made it into a mere "sphereoid".
As evidence, old Chinese coins and Masonic symbolism both used a square as representative of the Earth.
