I was never able to verify if it was true, but there was a rumor at the college I went to that in the 70s a group of FBI agents were sent to the campus to infiltrate communist groups, only to discover the college didn't really have much if any communists, so they literally started a fake communist group that was basically just them and sent reports back to the bureau about their activities.

On the one hand any FBI founded communist group would be so dogshit I don't think it'd attract any members, on the other hand a bunch of mormons larping communism just reproducing communist manifesto points probably would
