I went back to work on my writeup, I will return to finish this tomorrow.
Work in progress, cws for hitler, nazis, the holocaust, and a couple dick jokes
"A sensationalistic thriller about Hitler." - The New York KKKrimes
Books are a terrible medium for "so bad its good" media. The Room, one of the most notorious "so bad its good" movies only takes an hour an a half to get through and will reach its conclusion unaided by the observer. Conversely, something like Sonic's Ultimate Harem can only be completed through 100's of manhours spent in rapt attention, analyzing the material in question. Moreover a shitty wordsmith can fail their reader through errors and confusing lexical choices. Worst of all, bad writing is usually boring.
Siegfried, with its short length, competent writing, and novel but absurd premise, does not have these problems. I describe it as a self-insert Hitler fan fic that boldly asks "what if Hitler had a secret son and his foster parents told the best author ever (who is totally not me)".
Harry Mulisch was one of the most celebrated European authors of the 20th century. The son of a Jewish mother, Nazi collaborator father, and the grandchild of holocaust victims, he has been quoted with saying: "I didn't so much experience the Second World War. I am the Second World War." He has a few dozen awards to his name and was almost granted the Nobel prize for literature a couple times (allegedly). In the anglosphere he is best known for The Assault; a novel about a boy who's family was massacred during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, and how his life played out afterwards. It is (was?) frequently used as instructional material in advanced level highschool literature courses. Its a beautiful novel about the lasting impacts of violence, Europe, and how pickles are just like crocodiles.
Siegfried in a nutshell:
Hey guys, my name is Rudolph Herter, I'm the bestest, coolest, most awesomest author of all time! My life is amazing! I just wrote the most important novel to ever be written, I have a hot, sexy wife, and everyone loves me! BTW I'm totally not Harry Mulisch haha :) Anyways I got a huuuuuuuge problem on my hands! Remember how I said that I just wrote the most important book ever? Well now I have to top that with something even better!!!! You see, big dick authors such as myself are suuuper important because only we can make sense of this craaaaaaazy world for the rest of you guys! I went on this talk show and told everyone that my next book was gonna figure out just how Hitler was so evil! Which no one has ever done! Ever! No one! Then everyone clapped! Then after the show these two old people came up to me and were all like "eyo we raised Hitlers son." and I was like "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA????" and then cough cough
Okay, using that (writing) voice was starting to hurt so I'm gonna do this normal now.
The self-portrayal of Mulisch is self-aggrandizing to the point of it being masturbatory and it is incredibly funny at times. Not-Harry Mulisch is giving talks on an award tour where he announces that his next book would be an attempt to comprehend the evil of Adolph Hitler. Immediately after the show he is approached by an elderly couple who confess to being the foster parents of Hitler's secret son, Siegfried. The rest of the story has chapters that swap between this alternate history of Hitler's family life and Not Harry Mulisch reflecting on his life, art, and career. Without spoiling too much, the Hitler fanfic portion is actually fairly compelling. Siegfried calls his father "Uncle Adi", because the secret must be kept from him too, despite how much Hitler wishes he could be his dad. I feel that this is a reflection on the way fascism drains its practicioners of their own humanity, leaving them alienated, depriving them of what could have been normal lives.

Anti-theism, pessimism for queer rights
I try to be a bit hopeful for the future of queer people, but one of the biggest doomer points for me is how many people still believe in god. Like, it's 2026 and so many people are still doing this shit. It would be one thing if religious people were far away from power, but that's going to take a lot of time. For a brief time in the 2010s, I was hopeful people were gradually starting to move past religion. I'm not so sure now. Maybe it's just the overall rise of facism paired with how bleak the future currently is. Maybe people will take any comfort at this point. Regardless, it's hard for me to feel safe around and have any kind of friendship with a religious person.
I don't think the end of theism will be the complete end of bigotry towards queer people, but it would be a great start.

yupand it's getting really hard to put up with people who are, even if they're "harmlessly" practicing. i want to take the radical approach that these people just need to be like educated or whatever but i can't help it after a lifetime of living in the bible belt. if you're religious i literally think less of you.
it's like living in a world where people earnestly come up to you and talk to you about santa claus, and policy is determined on whether or not he is going to put you on the naughty list and you just have to play along or you're subhuman. yup umhmm his elves must be working extra hard this year! it's not real it's not real!!! why are we entertaining this conversation!!!!!!!
re:
I feel the exact same way. At a certain point, it becomes seriously concerning that people believe a benevolent god is watching over us. People pray every night, but unimaginable suffering continues with no divine intervention in sight. This kind of belief is a complete disregard for reality. If there really is a god and it has any kind of power, then we can worry about it when that time finally comes. It'll sure have a lot to answer for.

Yea me too. If people will fall for god they really will fall for any old shit.People are not rational. They will not and do not accept reason.
It would be a good start towards rationalism. But looking at the numbers it won't happen.
Oh also, because it is inherently irrational, people can freely use it to "support" whatever irrational bullshit you already believe or want to be true. You already think a magic deity exists. What would cause you to examine your other beliefs.
Fucking hate this shit. Genuinely one that I keep coming back to. People continue to follow the most backwards ass religions for zero actual reason.
re:
This is my biggest worry. Like, we have a serious problem if someone is already that far gone. So many people who believe in something so outlandish have power across the world, we see how that's been going. Even the "rational" religious people I know feel like they're maybe one or two bad days away from a hard right pivot.

The 2010s atheism movement fucked itself so badly by being liberal. It never offered people any real solutions and was too disparate in viewpoints. Frankly it never had a chance of succeeding. I was also hopeful at the time but in hindsight idk what I was smoking at the time.
re:
I agree 100% and have similar feelings for how the fight for queer rights were dilluted and co-opted by liberalism too. I don't think it's impossible to push back against religion again, but it's going to take time.
