Kind of an understatement, the bomber NOT crashing would literally be the bigger disaster
Stuff like this reminds me of how the Demon Core acquired memetic infamy for killing a bunch of people, when people should remember that its original intended purpose was to murder many thousands of civilains before Japan surrendered
It's funny when weapons end up killing the people that tried to use it. Like how the Sig Sauer was designed to kills dogs and unarmed minorities but it instead shoots cops in the groin. Karma is a funny bitch.

I'm not aware of the specific circumstances of the demon core incident, but afaik they kept secret the nature of Project Manhattan to most scientists working on it
