IME:

A lot of them are just illiterate/borderline illiterate. Telling them to read an article or literally anything is like telling someone who can't even do a single pushup to do pullups. They lash out because they know they can't understand what they are reading.
The rest of them are just using the question as an excuse to talk to you. They don't actually care about the answer you give. The real answer they want you to give is "I don't know. Let's find out together." because then the conversation can continue with the added bonus that you don't think they're illiterate like 1.
