And if you really have to do some damage quickly and escape, a hard side strike to the knee will drop them, and if they do get up, they won't be able to follow you very well.
You need to do everything in your power to hyperextend the knee in any direction it doesn't normally bend, and really put your weight into it. A kick will do, but if you have to, like if you're already on the ground, throw yourself against the side of his knee with all your body weight.
He won't be running after you.
