I just did some research because I was wondering how may groundhogs have held the title of Phil. I can’t find anything about the actual animals. I was hoping for at least a “This is Punxsutawney Phil XII” but no.

God that’s really depressing. This whole annual song and dance but no one cares about the star of the show? Someone please tell me the reason for this is because they just use a wild groundhog and set it free after it completes its meteorological duties.

i knew this person who had a cat. a black cat. and it had some name like Ghost. and when Ghost died, they would get another black cat and name it Ghost.

i always thought that was kinda shitty.

i rarely ever use my cats name, but every cat ive ever had is distinct in my memory by their behavior and their name, and i wouldn't want to conflate them.

I agree, at the very least make it “Ghost II” or “Ghost Jr.” But even then it’d have to be some “holy shit is this my old can reincarnated??” situation otherwise it feels disrespectful.

They give him the elixir of eternal groundhog life for he never dies.

Unfortunately they never give his wife it, and they force him to remarry every time one passes.

Canonically, Punxsutawney Phil is immortal, it has been the same groundhog since 1883. In real life, I imagine the groundhog does not care about having its own name.
