When a federated account is banned from an instance, the backend also bans them from any community on the instance they've interacted with (including if you've just voted in them if I'm not mistaken).
Also, yes, admins can ban anyone on any community on their instance (but only locally if it's a remote community). Ergo, a lemmy.zip admin can ban you from !asklemmy@lemmy.world on their instance, but you won't be officially banned and other instances will see your content there while users on lemmy.zip will not.
That’s pretty insane levels of power.
So Occam’s Razor is that this instance admin must have seen one of my opinionated pieces on Trump or something that offended them, and then just said “Nah, this one isn’t coming to my instance”?
Not because I broke a rule, or offended anyone on that instance but because one person didn’t like my opinion on a post somewhere else.
How is that insane levels of power? They don't want you sending messages to their server instance they own and pay for. It only effects other people on Lemmy.zip and the only effect on you is that you can't interact with the communities hosted there. You're still free to participate and use communities on any other instance. Lemmy is not a centralized service like reddit. It is a web of small instances and you send email like messages in the activitypub format to each one. If you have a shitty opinion and someone who owns and pays for a server doesn't want your shitty opinion to contaminate their server, that is their right.
Fedi really highlights the dumbfuckery of this level of argumentative. Bruh has all of fedi to go bother and has their drawers in a twist over one server telling them no.
Ok from that point of view it is seems reasonable, but seeing how I’m on world, and world is like still 60-70% of Lemmy, I was referring to the fact that hypothetically one lemmy.world admin could essentially make people disappear.
Which is what ICE is for.
Which is kinda what we’re here trying to call out.
With insane levels of power I meant that one person in their basement with their parents creditcard who no one elected, has a disproportionate say in who gets to speak and who doesn’t.
I’m not on X and I’m basically just discovering (I know) that this is just a glued together bunch of X-es. (In terms of of absolute admin power, luckily not (yet) in terms of content)
If that person did this reasonless instance-banning with multiple people, at what point would there be a consideration to defederate from their instance? Is there even a process for that?
Are you seriously comparing being banned from a small social media site, where you could simply create another account in 5 minutes, to being arrested and imprisoned by a government agency?
I’m not, I don’t care about that. I am literally talking about a hypothetical scenario. Using the word hypothetical was a clue missed.
I’m saying we are trying to be one of the last bastions of free decentralised speech, and it turns out we’re not really protected from Mini-Spezzes going full authoritarian. Not just on lemmy.zip, but anywhere. The software (made by already questionable devs I hear) has authoritarianism built in.
Go ahead downvote again, I was under the impression this decentralised model ment more accountability for the ones with red button access too. I was wrong.
And of course I know you can have multiple accounts, but that’s not a solution. Not if you have an account that has some standing of sort.

Makes two of us. I cannot believe you’re okay with another human being treating you like that. Who cares if they own the joint. Nobody forced them to do it. If you decide to spin up an instance you do it because you want to help the human race. You want to make the internet more positive.
And here people are defending less-enlightened admins who just randomly feel like banning people just for the sake of it, just because they can.
And somehow I’m the disrespectful one. Come on. Don’t build a tent for people to join publicly and then randomly exclude that person because you don’t like something you overheard. If you’re like that, build a private tent.

An admin banning you from their platform is nothing remotely close to people being snatched off the street and put into Alligator Auschwitz or sent to a foreign prison.
Unlike the people actually being persecuted, you can just go create another account so you don't have to cry about it.
Also, don't take this as me defending the admin, it's a stupid decision. But if this is your response, maybe the admin made an informed decision (one that I don't care to investigate, given the galaxy brain take here).
I'm still not seeing the insane levels of power. You can just make another account on another instance or launch your own on your own computer. If you're worried about .world there are entire Lemmy bubbles that don't interact with .world at all like Hexbear even if you were to not have access to communities on lemmy.world any more. In all cases on the internet someone needs to have the administrative power but it isn't insane, it is over a resource that person literally pays for and all their actions are documented in clear text on the modlog which also federates. There is no shadowbanning or anything else like that.

It’s always interesting to read people who are not concerned about this. You must live very different lives. And the automatic upvoting of that line of thought and the downvoting of any kind of pushback is just hilarious. Some days it feels like Reddit is more progressive than whatever this is.
You are insane dude, it is about another account. The admins are running this at their own cost for their own purposes. If you don't like it, set up your own instance. I used to run Vegan Theory Club and it got super annoying dealing with people like you so now I use my friends instance. No issues. We don't even have downvotes enabled here.
Sounds like you have a problem that won't ever be resolved reasonably. You are upset that you don't have authority, too bad. Set up an instance and communities and do your own thing if that is what you want.

To be fair, by being on .world; we give the admins of that server that power. We could collectively move our accounts to another instance or start our own if we don’t want them to have that power.

I know my opinions can be hard to hear for some, so if it’s just me, I don’t really care. I never really interacted with that instance anyway. But if this is a powertripping admin who is systematically doing instance wide bans on users then I’d be happy to testify under oath.
