We say it a lot, but the UN is so godamn feckless. No demand for the US to stand down, no urgent meeting to discuss intervention, no other militaries even gesturing that this is a bad look. Radio fucking silence. This is all happening in slow motion.
Has the Brazilian military been on alert? Or is everyone really going to sit back and watch, make a speech maybe, and then talk about how no one could've seen this coming?
The UN, theoretically, should be the greatest deterrent to colonialism, giving assembly and collective power to everyone who is not the hegemon.
You’d think that if countries valued their sovereignty, they would use all tools they have available to them to stop United States from going to war against a country without even a casus belli. Oil is literally an official reason stated by the adminc (I’m going to take a wild guess), where are the Gulf nations? Where’s the BRICS coalition?
The problem is that most countries are ruled by capitalists, who care more about themselves than their country's sovereignty.
You should watch the movie The Whistleblower. Yes it's a true story. It's based on what the UN actually does in war zones.
I am aware of the UN’s failings lol
That's your issue. You don't see it as a UN success story.
The UN aided in the criminal embargo of Yemen that starved hundreds of thousands of civilians. Instead of clearing the Saudi and American roadblocks stopping ships from docking at their ports, the UN added an additional layer of roadblocks on top of the Saudi/US ones and reinforced the sanctions and starvation. They are complicit in genocide. That is what they actually do in war zones. Their goal was for there just to be 1 checkpoint for ships to be approved at before docking in Yemen (to check for Iranian weapons or whatever), but the Saudis and Americans disregarded the UN and kept doing their stops anyway. The UN was unable to get them to stop, but also kept enforcing their own roadblocks.
At best, the UN is too feckless and weak to make things better despite earnest attempts. At worst, they are collaborators with the imperialists in their sanction regimes of mass starvation.
Yup, you are correct. These are not failures. These are the inherent contradictions of the system.
Less so contradictions, and moreso the system just doing what it is primarily designed to do. Promote American imperialism and legitimize their sanction regimes.
The UN was originally a counterbalance between the USSR and the capitalist west to stabilize the world and allow a forum for negotiations and diplomacy. Since the USSR collapsed, it lost its original function as one side of the scale now was empty. The US then had full control to use the UN as a tool towards its own ends.
I think you don't understand what a contradiction is in dialectical Materialist sense. Here, the two contradictory forces are the UN and the global democratic governance. https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/Contradiction
I don't think there's any element of global democratic governance going on there. It's headquartered in New York, the same state where Maduro and his wife are being paraded around as a roman triumph, flaunting all UN charter resolutions. It's a total farce. The only time UN decisions mean anything at all is when the US is backing it, and it's usually just there to give legitimacy to the US. If the US doesn't want something they just veto or ignore it without consequence. It's all benefit, no downside to the US.
Because it's not. Your failing is viewing singular happenings isolated from the context which enabled them.
I doubt our military is on alert, it's honestly more likely that they'd welcome the US soldiers. And even if they were we literally can't afford confrontation with the US, last I checked we only have ammunition for a few hours of direct confrontation in a war.
Shit's bleak.
