Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

It feels trite to even point out, but the Democrats could get a lot of mileage out of "Republicans say they're patriotic, but they hate freedom: [list of policies curtailing freedom]"

Like, even the Democrats who say trans issues turn off their constituents. Suspect claim, but Ok. Then message around that. Reframe it. Describe it in terms of "personal freedoms" rather than "living your truth". How are you all so bad at this.

I’d go even meaner. Bring back the mid-late 2000s edgy atheist lefty.

We won’t win just by saying “you’re mean”, we need to make them feel like losers for being mean. Mock Americans for being stupid and of course that’s the reason they’re so mean to others, stupid people tend to be complete and utter assholes.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 23 points 4 months ago (3 children)

The trick is doing it without being condescending.

Gotta treat people like they're smart enough to learn something new (because they are), while also recognizing that there are ways to frame things that make it more palatable.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Agreed.

“Normies” or people who haven’t really thought about their beliefs we can reach. Yeah, it’ll be tough love, but we need bigotry to be embarrassing.

“Freaks” or people who are such ideologues they are unreachable are exempt and should just be mocked and dismissed.

Terminology isn't great, but I agree with what you mean.

If it makes you feel any better I bet every single person on this website fits into the "freak" category

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

freak (complimentary) vs freak (derogatory)

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago

Beat me to it. There are good freaks bad freaks, and FREAK freaks hyperflush.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago

"you're acting stupid" vs "you are stupid"

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago

"one joke" "get new material" etc etc

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 13 points 4 months ago

walzs' "they're weird" thing was working but dnc was courting the fucking cheney war crime family so they made him stop instead of running with it.

That type of leftist was known for being very ableist and transphobic however, & more (going down the list of things normally attributed to reactionary white people.)

Also the worst insult is to be called stxpid? We can do better than that. Plus it reminds me of what my shitty parents used to say "the worst thing you can be is stxpid" (they have a really bad case of internalized ableism)

Image description: deflection insult meme. Where one person's intended insult is deflected by the target "guy you dont like who will never care" hits someone unintended "person you care about with the same traits who now knows what you think of them" (original meme is about bodyshaming but also applies to insulting based on "stupidity")

The way the Dems cancelled the shutdown that was working in their favor 100% confirms that they are controlled opposition, imo. It joins a long list of other things that 100% confirm that fact.

Even if Schumer, Pelosi and co don't view themselves that way, that's the role they've been playing for as long as I can remember. Even during the Obama and Biden administrations, the Dems were behaving more like controlled opposition than the party in power.

[–] Red_October@hexbear.net 13 points 4 months ago

All of them being owned by the same people confirms that right off the bat. As for what they think of themselves, do actors really think they’re the characters they’re playing?

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

The purpose of a system is what it does

[–] Commie_Chameleon@hexbear.net 17 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Probably too scared they’d run off some of the donor class if they did anything smart like that.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, but the doner class is just as locked into the duopoly as the rest of us. There is a cost to finding new candidates, and therefore a degree of maneuverability before your doners give up on the sunk cost and go looking elsewhere. There's always the risk of pushing too far, but that should not mean you don't push.

Except of course Democrats are too cowardly to recognize their own structural leverage.

I've heard Buttigeg say things like that before. We make fun of him here for being a spineless, neoliberal moderate, but I think he's actually one of the Democrats' best orators and the reason he's so popular among the libs I know. Hell, he has a chance to become President just because of that.

the dems aren't trying to win
