Turns out that capitalism in decay produces an environment which is actively harmful to human growth and flourishing. Who could have predicted that?
You could argue that any communication technology that doesn't tie in to everyday life is damaging. We're just seeing something that's far more compartmentalized/alienated than anything else.
A human brain is going to latch onto interesting things no matter what. The impact on the individual's life comes when they can make connections between direct experience and communications.
