Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (ツクヨミノミコト, 月読命), or simply Tsukuyomi (ツクヨミ, 月読) or Tsukiyomi (ツキヨミ), is the moon kami in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion. The name "Tsukuyomi" is a compound of the Old Japanese words tsuku (月; "moon, month", becoming modern Japanese tsuki) and yomi (読み; "reading, counting"). The Nihon Shoki mentions this name spelled as Tsukuyumi (月弓; "moon bow"), but this yumi is likely a variation in pronunciation of yomi. An alternative interpretation is that his name is a combination of tsukiyo (月夜; "moonlit night") and mi (見; "looking, watching"). -no-Mikoto is a common honorific appended to the names of Kami; it may be understood as similar to the English honorific 'the Great'.

In Man'yōshū, Tsukuyomi's name is sometimes rendered as Tsukuyomi Otoko (月讀壮士; "moon-reading man"), implying that he is male

Myth

Tsukuyomi was the second of the "three noble children" (三貴子, Mihashira-no-Uzu-no-Miko) born when Izanagi-no-Mikoto, the kami who created the first land of Onogoroshima, was cleansing himself of his kegare while bathing after escaping the underworld and the clutches of his enraged dead sister, Izanami-no-Mikoto. Tsukuyomi was born when he washed out of Izanagi's right eye. However, in an alternative story, Tsukuyomi was born from a mirror made of white copper in Izanagi's right hand.

Tsukuyomi angered Amaterasu (who in some sources was his wife) when he killed Ukemochi, the megami of food. Amaterasu once sent Tsukuyomi to represent her at a feast presented by Ukemochi. The megami created the food by turning to the ocean and spitting out a fish, then facing a forest and spitting out game, and finally turning to a rice paddy and coughing up a bowl of rice. Tsukuyomi was utterly disgusted by the manner of which the exquisite-looking meal was made in, so he killed her.

Amaterasu learned what happened and she was so angry that she refused to ever look at Tsukuyomi again, forever moving to another part of the sky. This is the reason that day and night are never together. This is according to one of the accounts in the Nihon Shoki. Tsukuyomi does not have such significance in the Kojiki, in which there is a similar tale about Susanoo-no-Mikoto killing a similar food megami named Ōgetsuhime, who is often conflated with Ukemochi.

The only seeded torrents for Star Trek TOS on 1337x are like 200GB a season what the hell

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 10 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I’m pretty sure since bandwidth and disk space has gotten cheaper a lot of pirates have shifted to preferring content that is either 4K or bluray remuxes.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I found some ~20GB a season BRRIPs over at RARBG, nobody needs hundreds of gigs of William Shatner closeups.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

but we do need hundreds of gigs of Leonard Nimoy closeups

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 3 points 4 weeks ago

Dozens of gigs of Leonard Nimoy closeups is plenty for me.

Ive noticed this and hate it. If I like something enough to want the highest quality version I get a physical copy. Pirating is like renting for free to me. If it's something I will rewatch then I will buy a disc. I have TOS on VHS and 2 different dvd sets! I have TNG on VHS, DVD and Blu ray! I'll pay for quality, I pirate for convenience. That kinda hard drive space amd download time is far from that

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I generally agree, and do it for stuff I love rewatching or would consider classics. I’d buy more discs but space is at a premium. I really wish more video rental stores survived.

Same, last one conclusion was near me, 3 stories tall, amazing staff of usually film school students and they did free rentals for food bank donations so we would just shoplift stuff from the grocery store across the street

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

All this shit is going on a jellyfin server, I have no use for removable discs.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 4 weeks ago

Ive got a whole thing with taking something off my cool shelf full.of ny cool movies and putting a real disc into a resl player that puts me into a Sit Down and Watch mode where not doing that ritual makes it easier for me to be distracted. And I like having my shelved of cool stuff

Physical copies are annoying and cost money, still sad that good quality low bitrate content has become so much harder to come by. I suppose you could always grab the remux and re-encode, could even be automated

Normal ass pirate bay is good for trek, those nerds never turn off their seeds, my TOS download is a full DVD rip and is like 3 gigs. It even has a the special features

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

The version I went for is 1080p BRRIP but is 1/10 the size of the other 1080p BRRIP.

Was it my piratebay all time GOAT threesixtypee?

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Its cuz they change it to a quality that is a bit short of dvd, like 360p

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh I thought you were saying 360p is your Format Of All Time. No, I got the files from RARBG.

I try to keep my library either 1080p or 480p when that's the best an old thing is available in.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

For old sitcoms or whatever I do have some arguments that it is a bit better. Seinfeld was never meant to be watched above 480p. Im not made of disc space or wait time as I said for quality i just buy thr discs.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Seinfeld was never meant to be watched. If there are no wizards and/or spaceships in it I probably don't care about it.

Your loss. Seinfeld is a great show despite the namesake. It's really the George Cosranza show and he is the most relatable character in fiction. My entire professional life has been following everything he does and the rest of my life trying my best to do the opposite as he once did. We are all in the Summer of George
