Supposedly it's from a 1920s cookbook. I fear white americans cannot be proven to have been able to cook before like 1990
Edit: You know watergate salad doesn't seem that bad from what google showed me. Pistachio pudding with chopped pecans, whipped cream and pineapples?
I mean it doesn't sound great. But i come from a place where children are given a raw egg and a spoonful of sugar for a snack and told to stir until they get pseudo-custard.
my dad made that for me a couple times when i was a kid. i liked it.
i never got to try bread with lard and sugar though, the snack of his childhood :(
Bread with lard and either salt, some spice, or onion is still a thing here.
oh yeah, i've had that. bread, lard, salt, pepper, a little bit of raw red onion (i can never remember, red onions are the purple ones, right?)
it's great to line your stomach after a night of drinking, before going to sleep.
My family makes watergate salad for every single holiday, I thought it was something everyone did until a couple years ago, don't listen to any haters, it's amazing, but we don't add the pineapple and use chopped walnuts.
It's just a sweet pudding with nuts. I don't see how it would be bad. But it also doesn't sound amazing. It sounds fine.
