When I worked in pediatrics, kids have a weird limbo status for if they can consent or not. Little babies? They dont really get a choice if they have an IV placed or an NG. Littles? Okay, Ill listen to them about how scared they are but theyre still gonna get the shot (or whatever). Bigger kids... I dont like it but if mom agrees with the team the kid needs an NG placed, I gotta do it. When it comes to teens then I start taking their opinions into account, and if a 12 year old came in and asked for vaccines even if their parents were against it - we would consider them a mature minority and take their consent for it. Its all a weird grey zone and there wasn't a clear line.
I would often try to imagine them as dour 50 year olds reminiscing on their youths for if I should do or not do something lol. They might be really scared of a needle but the alternative would be getting sicker, or blind, or septic, or getting meningitis, or maybe getting healthier without concerns but taking longer.
When I was just talking to them or setting up a therapeutic dialogue, that was a lot easier. No judgements, show interest, active listening, contain high crisis panic stuff but otherwise let them feel what they feel. Some teens needed proverbial pushing to, like, get up and walking so they dont get a pneumonia or an ileus but that can be a gentle push. Some teens had conversion disorder because of something horrible and it takes a lot of reassuring and pressure to get then up and walking and dealing with the psychosomatic components. Some parents really sucked ass how they treated their kids and its a part of why I moved to adult world nursing instead.
i cant tell if you are agreeing, disagreeing, or simply providing information but this goes wayyyy beyond just medical things (though obviously thats also a factor, the fact circumcision on children is still legal in most places is incredibly disappointing) also hrt for all yippee :3 (fuck puberty blockers btw)
Continues to shock me how apathetic people are about cutting off bits of children's genitals?? And how you get looked at like some kinda nut for saying its bad and should be banned unless medically necessary??
edit: actually going to rant a bit because I'm pissed now. Even among people who dislike circumcision, many of them still do not take this position far enough. One common example is people wanting to leave a religious exemption. Fuck that. Why should I give a single flying fuck what you think god says? How fucking stupid is that? Unless you can demonstrate:

Your stupid fucking opinion (that kids should be circumcised) should not influence what is legal and what is abuse. And people will recognize this is abusive, this is wrong, this is mutilation, but still think we should allow it just because some people think that their god thinks they should. god it fucking pisses me off. So you're okay with children being abused and mutilated because the abuser thinks god says its fine?? A god they can't even show is fucking real??

even if god was real and did command it its still abuse tho :p not exactly a god worth listening to
Cissiety is literally out here giving infants bottom surgery that they can't consent to or even express a desire for but won't give it to trans teens who clearly need and want it smdh.
also i say fuck puberty blockers because trans kids should get to experience puberty at the same time as everybody else, aka they should just get actual hormones! :3
