After the suspected shooter has been detained, the FBI held a press conference to report on the case and announce the next steps going forward. Spoiler: we, as leftists, are fucked.

Key points:

  • The shooter is Tyler Robinson of Utah.
  • His friend reported him to the FBI.
  • Tyler's Discord messages have been used as evidence, as provided by his roommate.
  • ~~Robinson has been reported to be getting increasingly political, and during dinner one day, he spoke about how Kirk was "full of hate".~~ UPDATE 4: Tyler did not say that.
  • The casings do not contain any trans references. But they do have anti-fascist rhetoric (bella ciao and "notices bulges OwO" included) and symbols engraved in them.
  • Tyler was taken into custody on September 11th, 10 PM local time.
  • The investigation is still ongoing.
  • One guy cried while speaking.
  • Thousands of more leads of potential accomplices are being followed.
  • No other arrests are known
  • Tyler drove to campus on a car.
  • It's not known if Tyler is mentally ill.
  • The charging documents will be filed 3 days from now (September 16), then a preliminary hearing will take place.

  • Patel awkwardly trying to signal the Norse viking larp shit. "Charlie, I'll see you in Valhalla"
  • Utah Governor Cox told everyone to log off and stop consuming rage bait, called social media a cancer, and that everyone should "touch grass" (his actual words).

My personal speculation, take with a grain of salt because I have been wrong on some of this:
He will be charged with some level of terrorism. Cox laid the foundation with saying this was an attack on America itself, not just one person. We will hear more about an antifa discord group and there will be more investigation into antifa via RICO (they love the idea of RICO). We could see some more charges of discord users as accomplices. Banning of antifa groups on college campuses so that orgs like TPUSA can move in permanently and without official opposition.

alternatively, don't talk about anything important on anything unencrypted

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 47 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

And don’t assume anything online is encrypted (it’s not). Don’t assume people you know irl aren’t cops/feds. Strap up

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 22 points 4 weeks ago

Um but hexbear said my IP is safe Bwaaa

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 40 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

If you have a phone anywhere on or near you, don't talk about cool shit

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 31 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

Weirdly enough, it's not the "voodoo hacking" stuff (as Snowden calls it) that they get you on, but instead just people making mistakes. I don't think we've had a figure in the US that the feds needed anything more than warrants of messages and facial recognition to catch.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 25 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Is it possible that the "voodoo hacking" stuff is used to find leads, then the leads are followed up on using over-the-board techniques?

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 16 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Yep, parallel construction

Although in this case it looks like they didn't need it

Sometimes, but there's rarely any reason to use it. Over-the-board stuff is more than enough in most cases.

[–] zipper@hexbear.net 21 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

cause realistically there's just too much data out there about all of us. datamining is too saturated for law enforcement to use. only real use it has is pushing the right ad.

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 9 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't count on it though. That's one big reason why they're so interested in AI. It may not work that well, but could still be good enough in a lot of cases.

[–] zipper@hexbear.net 8 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

considering how badly AI hallucinates sometimes expect there to be soooooooo many false arrests in the future. the more data it has to work with the bigger the mistakes it can make.

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 8 points 4 weeks ago

But if they're falsely arresting "similar" people that's probably also good enough for their purposes

For reference, 1 datapoint corresponds to around 20% accuracy and the scaling is not linear

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 11 points 4 weeks ago

They also just have cell tower user maps and can find who was at an event specifically

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 9 points 4 weeks ago

Luigi. They 100% got him because of parallel construction and illegal NSA techniques which were brought out to immediately avenge the fallen c-suite.

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't talk about anything in chats. They're pushing LLMs everywhere and, if not already, will be watching your screens.

[–] Chulk@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

And if you have conversations in person, it's best to have it somewhere without phones or a TV, or any other IoT device. Hell, it sounds crazy, but even wifi signals can theoretically listen to you.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 5 points 4 weeks ago

Well, I guess that old Soviet joke of "where can you freely express your political opinions? In your own kitchen" isn't as true anymore...

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

If you're a valuable enough target, glass windows and potato chip bags can also listen to you. If I recall correctly, the laser to glass window listening is in current use. The video of potato chip bags was a proof of concept but that was years ago, so is probably available to use by now too.

Although I think that one can go down too deep of a rabbit hole worrying about this stuff, like in the classic 70s movie from Coppola, "The Conversation".

[–] Chulk@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Crazy, so do they shine a laser at the glass and detect vibrations from speech on the other side?

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago

Exactly! The potato chip bag on the other hand, relies on video to analyze the vibrations on the bag.

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

While I 100% agree with this it sounds like in this case it didn't matter, his friend showed the FBI the messages.

[–] sictransitgloria@hexbear.net 3 points 4 weeks ago

that's why you also always use self-destructing messages

[–] zipper@hexbear.net 61 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

discord is a privacy nightmare. dude did ZERO opsec reading. i swear i always do so much shit to cover my tracks up to the point where it's ridiculous but this dude just decides to not do anything to hide his trail and rawdog a political assassination??? where do i get these people's confidence screm-cool

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 24 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

reccomendation for op sec reading?

[–] zipper@hexbear.net 37 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Extreme Privacy by Michael Bazzell is LOADED with tons of good shit but it's pretty dense (think Capital levels of info). self-doxxing guides are a great start to learn just how exposed you are online, so i recommend doing that first.

You didn't put enough stats into American Exceptionalism; it's a high like no other

[–] BioWarfarePosadist@hexbear.net 8 points 4 weeks ago

Literally dude could have gotten away with it by just shutting up everywhere.

Utah Governor Cox told everyone to log off and stop consuming rage bait, called social media a cancer, and that everyone should "touch grass" (his actual words).

I mean... Pretty good advice tbh. I'm sick of social media, including HB a lot of the time with how the zone has been flooded with shit and were busy trying to keep tabs on it so we know if we're safe or not... And the more we see of the gaping void, the more it turns our minds to it.

I've been having a better week by spending more time talking with my loved ones, building the positive things we need and want in the world.

antifa groups

Okay maybe I'm showing my ass here, who the fuck are the groups marketing themselves as antifa at this point? I haven't heard that, the abbreviation form, since like 2016. Do we mean anyone that says they're anti-fascist?

[–] axont@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago

Some Wobbly (IWW) branches still have a GDC (general defense committee). If that counts. But because of how autonomous IWW branches can be that doesn't mean a lot. My local branch had 2 people in their GDC and they didn't do antifa stuff.

In terms of like groups who are anti fascist and do black block? That's kind of a thing still but it seems like people nowadays are more comfortable doing protest without masking up. "Antifa" in the public consciousness started to specifically mean shadowy figures in hoodies and masks who throw bricks. I don't know how often groups do that anymore since it kinda became dangerous to mask up at protests. Made the cops and reactionaries clock you as an open target to harass and/or assault.

[–] LangleyDominos@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah it's probably going to be groups that say they're anti-fascist more than a group with antifa in the title. Plus the FBI will rely on connections through memes and symbols. Some DSA uses the same rose symbol found among some antifa group from 2016? They're antifa.

One of the things that happened during Trump 1 was to defund and move federal LE away from tracking white supremacist and terrorist groups. That's another reason why right wing shooters keep popping up. All those spooky bad guys from 2016 in the pacific north west don't have a bell on their collar anymore. Part of Trump 2 is going to be replacing those groups in fed culture with "leftist" groups. They want antifa to have the same connotations as atomwaffen. They want to do "pepe the frog is a nazi dogwhistle" but for the left.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago

Oh, god. If the "socialist rose" has ever been used by Western anti-fascists, a bunch of demsocs are so, so, screwed. That symbol's like, known among the left for being used by folks who call themselves socialists but don't actually want socialism and think Leninism doesn't work. I.e, most of the American "left". You people are fucked. Never been more glad to not be American than I am right now.
