In fairness, I'm Welsh, and I'd reject someone from Cwmbran too 🤷🏻‍♂️

Only the French (afaik, I'm not a polyglot) get it right, they call it 'double V'

[–] AlmightyDoorman@kbin.earth 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In germany it is called W, pronounced [veː], non of that doubl bullshit, just it's own letter.

Just as in Hungarian, duplavé FTW

[–] XTL@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

And Finnish. And probably many many more since that's what it is.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

For most of the history of the Latin alphabet, there was no distinction between U and V.

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 months ago

More like Double Eww amirite?

[–] Tippon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not particularly, it's just one of those taking the piss out of the neighbours jokes. Wales is small enough that we're all close enough to be neighbours :)

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Yep. According to a quick search, Massachusetts is a wee bit larger in area, but has almost exactly the same amount of coastline. Had no clue Wales was so small.

Isn't that when a whole bunch of Welsh just showed up out of nowhere 538 million years ago?

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

No, they exploded, as the Welsh are wont to do.
