Doesn't Fanfic violate the copyrights of the author and publishing houses anyway? The argument is sort of hilarious. These thieves are breaking the law, stealing the intellectual property of genuine authors and then clutching their pearls if someone else does it too.

You do not get any money from writing fanfics - It's all for the love of the game. AI, on the other hand, makes money off of copyrighted material. Look at the current state of Amazon Kindle store.

Karma does have monetary value, and some fanfic writers even traded their stolen fame for paid positions as writers. If someone enjoys something, it could have been monetized, so at the very least you have lost opportunity costs that could have become shareholder value. That's what fanfic writers take from those who own the IP.

I'm just pointing out the obvious hypocrisy. Personally I don't believe in copyright. Copyright and IP law is theft and a violation of freedom of expression.

You're conflating copyright infringement with plagiarism. Copyright infringement is if you reproduce somebody else's copyrighted work in violation of their exclusive privilege to it, and plagiarism is if you disguise somebody else's work as your own. If I write fanfic were Han Solo and Lando Carrisian make out, I'm infringing of copyright, If I present "A New Hope" as my own original work, I'm committing plagiarism. In fact, in the latter case, if I claimed it was new work, I'd be committing plagiarism even if I were George Lucas. Disguising your old work as new is self plagiarism.

Copyright can be bought and sold, and licenses can be issued. For plagiarism consent of the original author doesn't matter. Basically, infringing on copyright is violating some legal privileges the state grants to authors, plagiarism is stealing authorship.

Wow. You're accusing me of using Plagiarism while keeping Plagiarism secret, and then continue to demolish my argument. What an impressive display of strawmanship. Which is, by the way, the evil cousin to plagiarism lol

But all kidding aside, if you're going to argue laws and legality this is very boring, because it depends on the country and solely on who has the most money and power to buy and sell those laws. Your argument might be valid or not depending on me being in a country with those laws or in international waters. Or having enough money to buy lobbyists to change those laws.

Personally I think a discussion about this has to be about ethics, about right and wrong. And fan fiction is clearly wrong because it steals hypothetical profits from hypothetical future monetization of an publishers commissioned work. How could one do that to the innocent shareholders?

I believe the only solution would be something like Choam company that manages all the intellectual property of the world and the technofeudalists can gain stakes. Then they can sell AI training data to AI companies as long as they comply with the relevant regulations. Like clearly AI mustn't be used by child molesters or terrorist scum. Only this will guarantee security and prosperity.

My apologies. How about this. I have some old reddit silver that I can give you as compensation?

Reddit silver does not have monetary value, and some lemmy writers even traded their stolen comments for foot rubs. If someone enjoys something, it could have been monetized, so at the very least we should think of the shareholders!!! Fan fic writers hurt their soft little feelings. They will die from these imaginary stolen profits.

I'm just pointing out the obvious boot garglingly Personally I don't believe in you. Enjoying something is theft!
