TL;DR

  • The European Council has ended its adoption procedure for rules related to phones with replaceable batteries.
  • By 2027, all phones released in the EU must have a battery the user can easily replace with no tools or expertise.
  • The regulation intends to introduce a circular economy for batteries.

Infinity for Lemmy (codeberg.org)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by bazsalanszky@lemmy.toldi.eu to c/android

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure this is the right community for this, but I want to announce my new project: Infinity for Lemmy.

Basically, this is a fork of the Infinity for Reddit application, modified to get it to work with Lemmy.

But I must remind you to temper your expectations as this project is still in its infancy. It has some basic features already in place, but there’s a lot more to be accomplished.

What Infinity for Lemmy Can Currently Do:

•	Browse posts
•	Handle multiple accounts
•	Upvote and downvote posts

What Infinity for Lemmy Cannot Do (Yet):

•	Load comments
•	Handle subscriptions
•	Search for posts, users, or communities
•	Write posts or comments
•	Send private messages
•	And many more

So, while Infinity for Lemmy is in its current state not a feature-rich client, but it’s a promising start.

For those interested, here’s the link to my git repository: https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Infinity-For-Lemmy

I invite everyone to contribute in whatever capacity they can, whether it be through coding, reporting bugs, suggesting features, or even just providing feedback and insights. Let’s shape the future of Infinity for Lemmy together!

  • New regulations will target six major tech companies to improve consumer experience and data privacy. These include Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft.
  • Pre-installed apps like weather and email that are difficult to delete will be disallowed, aiming to promote interoperability and reduce "gatekeeping" activities.
  • Companies will be prohibited from monetizing user data collected from phone apps for advertising purposes.
  • The regulations will encourage competition by allowing alternative payment systems, benefiting startups and consumers.
  • The European Commission aims to empower consumers and ensure tech giants adhere to European rules, providing immediate accountability for any issues.

Now this is nice. Hopefully 3rd party manufacturers can also provide a longer life span for the device.

The reason for Android's Notification system being better than iOS, is solely due to the ability to turn off individual aspects of an application's notifications.

Google, the poor multi-billion dollar scrappy startup that maintains Android, made a payment app that has one notification setting, "Google Pay". So all the ads, promotions, everything.

3rd party apps like PhonePe & Paytm have a better system.

How do you manage to maintain this OS?

Android is struggling to keep its market share in the United States, as Apple continues to take over in the market. But, despite Android as a whole losing ground, Google Pixel phones are becoming a bigger slice of the US market.

Counterpoint Research reports that, in Q2 2023, US smartphone shipments dropped by 24% year-over-year. That includes both iPhones and Android phones, and virtually every brand saw a drop in shipments. Samsung saw US shipments drop by 37% while Motorola saw a 17% drop. TCL saw the biggest decline at just shy of 70% year-over-year, and even Apple saw a 6% drop.
