thats when you surrender to the folk gods and just start playing cajón

virality can ABSOLUTELY be planned for, especially when this is one of the biggest scientific events to happen in the lifetime of younger generations (in their eyes). ive heard an unbelievable amount of fangirling from my friends (rightfully so, this is cool) and they DID plan for it. they knew they would be seen by a significant portion of the U.S., and I'm sure they modified their behavior somewhat on camera to accommodate that

Any good music sources? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I know this is kind of baby pirate knowledge but ive always just used a downloader for my streaming service. I have since moved to Linux entirely (massive win BTW, patting myself on the back for that) but there is no Linux-compatible downloader for my specific service. At least not one with the bulk functionality I would like. Any downloaders for Tidal or other sources of high-quality audio, likely to have some relatively niche old death metal? I'm a nerd about the quality.

edit: Just looked at the megathread and there seems to be some tools compatible with Tidal. Regardless, are there any applications that are alternatives? I'd like to see ALL of my options <3

Does anyone know any other artists that specifically sound like THIS song and this album? I'm relatively new to this specific genre... whatever it is, I'm not super familiar with it. I REALLY enjoy the breakbeats, the happy hardcore stuff, the kicks, the piano, really just everything about it. I'd like to know more about it and, if anyone knows and is willing to share, what the influences might be?

agreed, when people are FIRST learning to read sheet music it can be helpful to keep your eyes on the page and learn to associate certain notes on the page with certain finger/hand positions. yes, I regret my reliance on sheet music earlier because now my ear is waaayy behind. i kind of see it like understanding a piece of writing. if someone asks you what the article is about and you have to reference the article directly to answer it then I wouldn't consider that to be truly understanding the article. same with music, if you get asked to play something and you have to read straight off the page then I don't think you "know" the music. you just know how to play it. for some, thats all they need.

if someone is really just looking to be given music and made to play it according to the page then learning to read and play will be all they need. if they want to reach that next level though, like writing music, improvising, playing in a band, playing without your music, being a more dynamic performer, etc. they should learn to know the music.

i appreciate you pointing out the thing about mastery. i dont know that its that I'm "more experienced" though. i think we just have different goals and different instructors. my instructors were always people who were in their 20s who had experience in rock and jazz. i suppose I'm just highlighting the limitations between classical training and being trained with rock and jazz in mind. my goal (and I'd assume the goals of most of your students, if I'm right to assume theyre on the younger end) has always been to be an independent jack of all trades who is capable of writing, performing with other people in an informal environment, and improvising. i think the style of learning ive been describing can be more conducive to that. i would ALSO ALSO argue that it is more difficult and "risky" to teach in that way. you need a deep, practiced understanding of music theory, of your instrument, of the students life and willingness to learn, etc. its far more resource intensive.

ive been writing about this far too long lol I'm gonna cut it off here. i appreciate your perspective, ive admittedly never had a career of teaching people about music, but I have definitely explained things casually to friends and other musicians. i think it would help me to pick up that experience by tutoring on the side at some point.

ive found this actually just exhausts me to the point that I don't end up learning anything and just become a tad upset. i respond far better to brute repetition with minimal other busy work, like pre-made flash cards or studying with someone else. I also like rereading articles/study materials until I can imperfectly recite them comfortably :)

i know this wasn't necessarily an invitation to anecdotes but i just wanted to make it known that this is NOT universal

i dont know if this is what they intended to say, but ive found that when I exclusively practice with sheet music then look away, I'll completely blank. my brain relies on the constant reminder of what comes next. this might be okay if you plan on playing in an orchestra where you'll always have your sheet music or chart available (which even then.... what happens if theres an issue with a page turn? or the ipad doesn't work?). it DOES NOT work whatsoever if you plan on playing music in any other setting where you won't be able to stare at your music. its as if recalling the music and thinking deeply about it and its structure is an entirely unique sense you develop, and ive found that its mutually exclusive with keeping your eyes on the page.

also, keeping your eyes on the page makes it much harder to improvise, if thats your goal. when youre playing something and it deviates from what's on the page it can be very very disorienting. i might add to this comment as I dwell on it, this is something i care a lot about

i play keys, vocals, upright bass, bass guitar, viola, and guitar for context. played in the context of organized orchestras to bedroom bands to solo performances

[–] Cattypat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

at first I was disappointed he didn't do the bass solo near the start... and then he played the same thing perfectly immediately after

ive always been frustrated by the core of nationalism. you think that me bring born here gives me some specific spiritual connection to it besides the cultural ideals? it feels no different from saying that, because you were born near someone who was good at guitar, you must also be musically talented. it totally makes sense to me how this sort of pseudospiritual idea of "you were born here so you are _____" could escalate into "you were born here/of a certain skin color so you are not worthy of life"

[–] Cattypat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago

yup, it for sure is, plus all of the articles on her website are just paid advertisements (some of which are for sketch companies like masterworks)

this is so ai-generated lol

Mine is imagining Mike Ehrmantraut quietly threatening me. It gets me out of bed.

I've used mullvad for quite a long time, but because it doesn't have port forwarding, its created some concerns with media sharing. Ive seen TorGuard and AirVPN as the main 2 that are recommended. Are they as trustworthy as Mullvad?

Exactly the title. I'm researching having a jellyfin server and downloading media seems like it would be tedious (the way I've done it once or twice previously). I could use some clarity on what Sonarr is, what it looks like (like is there a GUI?? I'm too stupid to run something off of a terminal), and how it works. I'm familiar with torrenting but not with usenet, and I use the megathread from this community. Can someone explain Sonarr/Radarr to me in a way that would be understandable to someone at my level of understanding?

Does it get better? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I've tried switching to Linux from Windows 10 twice now. The first time went wonderfully (on Mint) until I found out that secure boot was stuck in the enabled mode and I had to completely reinstall my bios. This was absolutely necessary as everything was unbelievably slow, especially gaming (on a decent laptop). I understand this is totally my fault as almost every Linux guide says to make sure secure boot is disabled. After fighting with that for literal days, I finally reinstalled Linux mint. WiFi was suddenly completely nonfunctional, no networks were detected, and none of the proposed solutions I saw online worked. I have very little experience with Linux and other complicated tech nerd stuff besides that which comes with tinkering with computers occasionally. I do however have a great deal of patience and stubbornness. I spent maybe a week or 2 just working on this first attempt at making Mint work, until I ran out of patience. After coming back to it a month or 2 later, I decided to try Pop!_OS. Once again, it went incredibly at the start. Because I fixed the secure boot situation, I could now game better than I ever could when I had windows installed. Very few compatibility issues showed up that I couldn't conquer. Suddenly, I try playing Enter the Gungeon after having already played it a couple of times. Nothing out of the ordinary, I had done this before. Suddenly the entire computer freezes and I can still hear just fine. I restart my computer and... no sound. Nothing from any possible source, not Discord, not Firefox, not even the media I have downloaded. I look up the problem, I see several people have had it before, and only a couple ever got a solution. I try EVERY proposed solution on any forum with even similar issues, and still nothing. I have been fighting with my computer for 3 or 4 hours now. I've heard Linux praised for feeling like it is your computer that is subject to your will. I'd disagree right now, because it feels like there are spirits in my laptop trying to intentionally fuck me over every time I start enjoying the Linux experience. Does it get better? Am I crazy? Am I haunted? How is this anyone's ideal experience?

edit: I'm on an MSI Thin GF63. Nvidia GPU, Intel CPU. Compatibility seemed fine WHILE this latest attempt was working, up until my sound got fucked. I have a hard time imagining if that could be related to anything besides my sound card and drivers, but I'm nowhere near savvy when it comes to Linux. I'm now installing Bazzite as some of you guys recommended so I can ease myself into this whole Linux thing. I'll give another update if this fixes it :3

edit edit: It's still happening. I can see the "Alder Lake PCH-P high definition audio controller" in my audio config GUI apps and I can see the meter moving when audio is playing. Still, nothing is played. I am not dual-booting. Ive seen people have had issues with this card before, but seemingly the only solution (that I've yet to try) is to buy a whole new laptop. I don't have the money to do that currently. If someone is particularly tech savvy I am willing to hear out proposed solutions, but know that I have tried nearly everything online even remotely related to broken audio on Linux. My computer is haunted and I'll need a proper qualified exorcist it seems. note: it works with Bluetooth headphones. I haven't had a chance to test it with wired headphones but I will continue to give (near)real-time updates.

Ive been working on a project and I'm extremely hyperfocused so I just thought to throw something together really quick. Upon putting the tofurkey and cheese onto the tortilla, I thought it could use something to make it more "nutritionally complete." Thats when I remembered I had a leftover taco from taco bell in the fridge. AMA I guess

update: I finished it and it was pretty good

I currently use windows 10 in my daily life. I often play games, use browsers, basic stuff like that. On top of that, I also experiment with different music software, mostly Reaper for now. I edit videos and images at a very basic level as well. Upon switching, what should I expect to change? I'm considering Pop!_OS seeing as its praised for its compatibility and easy switching. What's the situation with gaming look like? I know gaming on Linux has been a HIGHLY discussed topic for a while, is it easy to play any (non triple-A) steam game? I'm nowhere near involved in computer science, I'd just consider myself more stubborn than most end-users so I can persevere through some basic problems.

I need to post so I may as well quickly yap (also I wanna help this comm grow) I've been playing elite dangerous and I've never previously committed myself to an MMO and GOD IS THIS GAME FUN!! SO MUCH SHIT TO DO!!!! IT FEELS SO GOOD TO HAVE OPTIONS AND NOT BE EXPECTED TO GO ONE DIRECTION OR THE OTHER!!!!

I see the word comrade get passed around a lot on the internet, particularly lemmy, and I've never really known the lore behind it. The only association I have with the word is that it's a word I primarily see used by tankies (as in, authoritarian leftists who hate on authoritarianism in the west but not in the east). Does anyone know and can explain it in a relatively understandable way?

I'm fairly new to piracy overall, but I feel like I understand the basics of how to avoid my ISP and such. A family member who's in college texted me the other day asking how she could pirate textbooks and I realized I'd never thought about it. Any tips for pirating textbooks? Safe sites?
