I've the opportunity to watch it and i want to know if it's worth it or not, because game-based shows are known to be not that great.

Edit : at the moment i write this, im at episode 3, they seems to have respected the game's lore even if i disagree with the cause they choose in the scenario to force the hero to left the vault.

It's good.

If you've never played the games, it may take a few episodes to figure out, but my kids (who've never played) enjoyed it.

The universe has so many characters, factions, and creatures that I would say not even 1/4 are in the first season, so there is a lot of in universe room to expand and explore story-wise.

Not often I say this about new streaming series, but I highly recommend!

Should I play before watching? I heard there are nice inside jokes, is that true? Which Game should I play, all?

[-] unmarketableplushie@pawb.social 10 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I haven't watched the TV series, but I'm a big enthusiast of the games.

I'd say start at the start, especially if you're alright with more old-school games. The first two are (sometimes punishingly hard) isometric RPGs that I personally had a blast playing. Some of the later games have little references to them that you might miss, too.

Get Fallout 2 on GOG instead of Steam if you can, the version on Steam is the censored European version that removes all the child characters and quite a bit of content with them (since you had the option to kill them in the game's open world environment, despite the game heavily penalising child murder).

If turn-based combat and 90s graphics really repulse you (totally fair, I know they're not everyone's cup of tea), you could try playing the 3D games instead, which are essentially first-person RPGs with FPS elements. Fallout 3 is alright, the story isn't that good, and the gunplay just feels a bit off, but the environments are really well-crafted and are fun to traverse.

If you have to play one Fallout game though, I would pick Fallout New Vegas. It's mostly made by the guys who made the first two games, and they really really knocked the ball out of the park. It's still got the slightly awkward gunplay of the third game, but everything else is really well done. The story especially is probably one of the best video game narratives I've experienced (putting it up there with those of Disco Elysium and Undertale).

I haven't played Fallout 4, so I can't really give you any recommendation there.

[-] HopingForBetter@lemmy.today 6 points 6 months ago

Seconded.

I've played most of the games.

New Vegas is best for overall gameplay.

Personally, I like 4 best, but that's because I played it first and the newer interfaces and voice-acting integration is smoother (it's a newer game, so this is kind of th point). But, everyone I've talked to says New Vegas is the best, and I have to agree.

The games are pretty dated

There is a good chance you won’t enjoy them, see if it’s something you’d like first and pick the one that looks most fun

His kids could be any age.

[-] Boiglenoight@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

That’s true too. Thinking about kids less than say, 15, watching this show is what makes me wonder. The level of violence is shocking to me and I’m over the hill. Can’t imagine how it might hit to someone in their formative years.

[-] HopingForBetter@lemmy.today 1 points 6 months ago

Absolutely.

[-] Odelay42@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

So far so good 3 episodes in.

The look and feel of the world is great.

The characters are pretty believable.

Writing is good so far.

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 1 points 6 months ago

Is the writing like fallout though? Or is it gonna just be some soap opera like the walking dead?

[-] iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee 12 points 6 months ago

Trust me... The writing is very much with the same dark/silly humor as the game. You even get characters ignoring their main quests and going to clear side quests.

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 7 points 6 months ago

I just watched the first episode and I’m pretty pleased. However, my friend watching with me had never played the games and I’m sure was rolling their eyes each time I said, “that’s in the game, that’s in the game!” And my reflex to hold my thumb up the moment I saw Vault Boy with that lasso.

[-] JimmyChanga@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Not soap opera-y at all imo, 4 episodes in. It's great, it feels like the fallout world 100%

[-] Kadaj21@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

Binged, thoroughly enjoyed and now await season2

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 12 points 6 months ago

Basically binged through everything but the last episode and it's really good. I was skeptical that the concept could even work, but it's knocked my stupid socks off.

[-] emmie@lemmy.ml 9 points 6 months ago

It’s very entertaining

[-] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago

Great show so far. We used to complain about how Hollywood would change everything we loved from a game series, when translating to the screen. This show literally takes place within the canon of the games, and shares every bit of lore and design that games do.

[-] DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com 9 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

We loved it - binged the whole thing in a couple of days. Probably helps that we're huge fans of Walton Goggins.

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 9 points 6 months ago

Three episodes in, fantastic so far

[-] claycle@lemm.ee 7 points 6 months ago

It constantly makes me smile, whether it’s being smart, the actors are giving perfectly calibrated performances, or the action suddenly goes wham-bam VATS over the top.

3 eps in. Happy.

[-] Nemo@midwest.social 5 points 6 months ago

All my coworkers were saying they loved it this morning. Source: Nerdy bartenders.

I've watched the first season (8 episodes) and I think it's pretty good. I personally think the first episode was a little slow getting into things. If you don't know anything about Fallout it may be a bit confusing at first because they don't really explain much of the Fallout lore or how things work in that world, but it mostly all comes together by the end of the season.

Apparently they've already greenlit a second season so that's awesome, I'm just sad we'll have to wait until probably next year to see it.

[-] survivalmachine@beehaw.org 2 points 6 months ago

If it's done by the Westworld peeps, i wouldn't be surprised if there aren't 2 years between seasons.

[-] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

That makes me a little more sad.

[-] GnomeKat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 months ago

Binged it in one night, I enjoyed it a lot.

[-] beardown@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

Watched 6 episodes and I think I'm done. It's boring and very contrived and simply written. I'm not enjoying any of the characters or performances either

The prop and costume design is well done. That's about it

Also, they erased the New California Republic despite setting the show in California. Not sure why Bethesda hates ideas that they didn't personally create, but it's very off-putting

[-] Shialac@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Sounds like the average Bethesda-Fallout

[-] TooLazyDidntName@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

The NCR plays a big part in the show. I think that revelation is in episode 7 though.

I agree on the plot being contrived, but I still enjoyed it regardless. That could just be because I'm a huge fallout fan though.

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago

It’s extremely good. They really knocked it out of the park. It’s already been renewed for season 2.

[-] 8ender@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Finished episode three and it’s good. Credentials: played every Fallout game ever made.

[-] Titou@feddit.de 1 points 6 months ago

The only i have not played are Fallout 1 & 2

[-] CorrodedCranium@leminal.space 2 points 6 months ago

I feel like the protagonist reminds me playing the original Fallout games. You're on the move and it's real easy to die. You aren't some immortal god.

[-] pr06lefs@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 months ago

Having a hard time sticking with it, partway through episode two. It seems very tropey and cliched, which I guess is part of the feel of the franchise. For some reason I don't feel drawn into the story.

[-] Corno@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago

I've only just got done watching the first episode but I'm really enjoying it so far!

[-] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 6 months ago

It's good and has good acting sets humor plot and politics

[-] flashgnash@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

Watched the first ep and it's pretty good. You can really tell the writers played and appreciated the game

[-] AlphaOmega@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

The first 3 episodes are written by one person, the last 5 are 5 different writers.

I think they nailed the design aspect, everything looks like it would belong and doesn't look cheap or fake.

It starts off good and then suffers from some odd writing choices and feels rushed and not natural or fluid as you get towards the end.

Great actors, decent story, great design, overall a 7.5/10 for me.

[-] gimpchrist@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

I only ever watched Fallout being played so I don't really know or follow it at all but I really fucking enjoy it and I can't wait to see New Vegas in the next season that's just going to be fucking Wild.... and I mean fucking Walton Goggins how can you fucking go wrong that shit is fucking sick

[-] Titou@feddit.de 1 points 6 months ago

They gonna put New Vegas in the next season ?

[-] gimpchrist@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Well I noticed that at the end of every episode, the weird Graphics at the end showed what was happening in the next episode.. and the last episode of episode 8 they showed graphics for New Vegas so I'm assuming I'm just assuming

[-] pelletbucket@lemm.ee 1 points 6 months ago

I don't like this kind of TV show but I really liked this one

[-] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

We've only watched the first couple of episodes and found it a bit too cartoony for our tastes.

One question I have for anyone who has watched the whole season - the question is a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the first episode.

Tap for spoilerDo they ever address the fact that the main character is raped in the first episode? Because it didn't come up in the second episode and we're unsure of whether the show creators are even aware they had a rape scene in their show.

[-] Kiosade@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 months ago

Not really, but I’m not even sure the character herself would qualify it as rape based on her upbringing, so that could be why.

[-] urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I really wish they hadn't included it. I personally found it unenjoyable to watch those first couple episodes because of it.

(Dear reader: If you're first reaction to my opinion is that sexual violence against women in this setting is realistic and fits in the show, 1) this is a series with mutant animals caused by radiation and a guy in a robot suit 2) you don't think much of your fellow man if you think it's inevitable 3) it's just like, my opinion, man)

I haven't watched the whole first season but we're about halfway through and they didn't mention it again. It would have been worse if the main character herself felt more... harmed, but she seems very utilitarian about it. I feel pretty mid about the show overall (for more reasons than just this), and I'm just really tired of acts of sexual violence showing up in media that's meant to be goofy entertainment.

[-] beardown@lemm.ee 1 points 6 months ago

There's also murder and significant gore as well

[-] urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 months ago

In the game, too.

I must point out, I don’t remember sexual violence being part of the game (I played only 3 and 4, though).

[-] Broken@lemmy.ml 0 points 6 months ago

I watched episode 1.

I'm delighted they kept the feel and aesthetic of the games. I thought they might change it and just be Fallout in name.

That being said, I thought the majority of the show was boring, slow, directed poorly, and I just didn't buy most of the characters and therefore didn't feel anything for them.

[-] PresidentCamacho@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

Watched the first episode and thought the pacing was slow. It was the first episode lol

[-] Broken@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 months ago

I'm not sure what you're getting at. There's no rule that says first episodes have to be slow. But more to my point, slow also doesn't mean it has to be boring. Most of it was.
