The Vatican on Monday declared gender-affirming surgery and surrogacy as grave violations of human dignity, putting them on par with abortion and euthanasia as practices that reject God’s plan for human life.

The Vatican’s doctrine office issued “Infinite Dignity,” a 20-page declaration that has been in the works for five years. After substantial revision in recent months, it was approved March 25 by Pope Francis, who ordered its publication.

In its most eagerly anticipated section, the Vatican repeated its rejection of “gender theory,” or the idea that one’s gender can be changed. It said God created man and woman as biologically different, separate beings, and said people must not tinker with that plan or try to “make oneself God.”

“It follows that any sex-change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception,” the document said.

Ok boomer. If trans people want to "make themselves God", I support that. Whatever that is supposed to mean anyway.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

It’s astounding to me how on every social issue in the past 2000 years, the church is always like 25-100 years late on taking the right position, and they just never learn.

So look forward to the Catholic Church being ok with gender affirming surgery in 2050.

They're ignoring the genocide in Palestine, like they did in Germany.

The social engineering once forced upon the masses to increase slave production is finally coming close to irrelevance

God's plan is just the alpha release, has a lot of bugs, and is not feature complete. Lol

He sounds a lot like Bethesda

Believe it or not, when I made that comment, what I had in mind was Skyrim's mammoths falling out of the sky, Barbas accidentally pushing me off a cliff, and the hired thugs going "we're here to teach you a lesson" while I'm fighting Alduin and they helped me deal some damage before they died.

[-] Shurimal@kbin.social 1 points 6 months ago

...and when a bunch of really talented modders make things better than great a loud minority starts crying out "Nooo! Can't play Skyrim with mods, it's cheating! I don't want anime tiddies and Thomas the Tank Engine in Skyrim! It's not what Todd envisioned! Waaaa!".

And yes, there actually is a certain bunch who think mods in a single-player game==cheating. Somehow.

Loud minority of folks running/ruining things for the other 2/3 or so seems to be a theme w humans.

There are more masochists out there than you might think.

Still an atheist but I would love if I died and found out God was just a guy in a cubicle who inherited a mess from its coworker who was fired.

"Look I am sorry everyone keeps getting aids and cancer alright I am trying. Freaken galaxies weren't rotating right so had to invent dark matter. Also Sharon ate the last donut and I get like a billion bug and feature requests from you apes every second. I didn't sign up for any of this! Ok ok calm I am in my happy place...you should probably go to heaven now. It's viking heaven but it's working"

I think offloading one's morality to a patriarchal power-hungry cartel is an embarrassment to human dignity, but you know what I do about it?

Let people live the one life they have in whatever way they want so long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

It's not anyone else's job to force their idea of dignity on people, but I guess the Catholic Church isn't known to stop their clergy from being forced onto unwilling targets.

[-] recapitated@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

So glad they're only blasting it and not slamming it.

[-] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

God is dead, popey boi, keep your culty ideas to yourself

[-] MagicShel@programming.dev 1 points 6 months ago

people must not tinker with that plan or try to “make oneself God.”

How fortunate it is that every single one of is sins and can all be forgiven, so we can just leave worrying about all that up to God, right? Right?

Or some shit. I'm an atheist, but I understand the myth better than most believers. Not that it matters because there is no logic or consistency anywhere in the doctrine, so why assume there is any in this edict?

something something yin and yang. Be a little based, gotta be a little unbased.

Balances out the universal gravitational whats its doohickeys or something.

[-] DougHolland@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

This is barely news; the headline might as well be 'Hate group hates'. But jeez, I giggled at the start of the fourth paragraph with, "In its most eagerly anticipated section…" Even among Christians, even among very-very-Christians, is there anyone who "eagerly anticipates" the Vatican's declarations of doctrine?

[-] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 6 months ago

Wasn't Eve created from a man's rib as an afterthought?

[-] yannic@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago

There are two creation narratives in the book of Genesis, and both are considered to be historical allegories.

[-] Willie@kbin.social 3 points 6 months ago

Can we really handwave away the whole Adam and Eve thing though?

If we do, then what did Jesus die for?

[-] assassin_aragorn@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

If we do, then what did Jesus die for?

The new motto for Vegas -- if you don't enjoy yourself, he died for nothing.

[-] Lath@kbin.earth 1 points 6 months ago

The original sin. Which in most myths is acquiring knowledge or attaining sentience.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago

both are considered to be historical allegories.

How convenient that the "word of god" (as many churches describe the bible) is so open to human interpretation.

[-] exanime@lemmy.today 3 points 6 months ago

But the ability to interpret it is also flexible.... Sometimes it's to be taking verbatim, sometimes it has to be interpreted (but only by the right people, of course)

But touching little kids was definitely part of the plan.

[-] Reality_Suit@lemmy.one 0 points 6 months ago

Touching kids is their only plan.

[-] esc27@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

If "God created man and woman as biologically different" then who created all the different intersex people? Even if you ignore or dismiss trans people, there are other people whose sexual characteristics at birth were not so easily sorted into male or female, and others whose physical traits either don't align with the basic understanding of "sex" chromosomes or whose chromosomes are different than XX and XY.

Logically, if God exists, then either their statement is wrong and He does make people whose gender is indeterminate, or there is another god who is also making people. Or perhaps He is not that involved in the process, and "God's Plan" is more of a loose framework.

can we just blow up the vatican

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

That doesn't sound fair to Italy. I am sure Italy has enough issues without random debris raining down on her.
