this is for mostly amazon prime, netflix, and siriusxm use (already subscribed to and currently used via browser on a pc).

needs to allow using 3.5mm speakers and have a button (not voice only) remote.

the user is a stubborn old guy who likes the speakers and monitor (it's a big dell p-series 1080p, hdmi or dp available) he has on his pc now. doesn't want to buy a tv or new speakers/soundbar and refuses to even consider an actual tv even though what he's looking for amounts to a 'smart tv' experience.

are there any current options for a streaming stick or box that has 3.5mm audio output (not on the remote like some roku have for bundled headphones)? thank you.

First, does your monitor have an audio output? Some do, and it will output the audio from the HDMI/DisplayPort input.

If not, you could get an HDMI audio extractor (like this one) to split the audio out of the HDMI signal. Then you can get any streaming device that has an HDMI out.

If your speakers are not powered and you are not married to your amplifier, you could buy an A/V receiver.

Maybe buy one of those HDMI Audio Extractor Adapters and hook up a Fire TV stick, or a Roku or the box or stick from Xiaomi, Nokia 8010, Chromecast or an Apple TV. I think it'll be easier and cheaper to use an adapter along with one of the common devices, instead of finding something that comes with 3.5mm audio.

i think they're limited to apple, fire or roku devices for the siriusxm support (which is still a relatively new feature of that service).

i hadn't considered a splitter or extractor yet because they're very much hit-or-miss on quality and whether they actually work as described.

does anyone have any suggestions for an audio extractor they know will work with netflix, prime, and siriusxm without any glitches or 'protection' (hdcp) issues and one of those streaming devices? total budget would probably be around $100 max for both items.

Sorry, no idea. There are however offerings on Amazon with HDCP in the name. Maybe you can find a review there that matches your use-case.

And with the SiriusXM requirement, it seems you're restricted to their supported devices anyways. I thought AndroidTV was easier to use...

Does the monitor have 3.5mm out port on it? If so then any HDMI device should work, with the 3.5mm port plugged into the monitor.

the monitor does not have audio pass-through. that is what sent me here to ask for other ideas.
