Donald Trump will soon receive controversial information from Special Counsel Jack Smith after the judge overseeing the former president's criminal case over classified documents stashed at Mar-a-Lago, Judge Cannon, ordered the prosecutor to deliver the data.

Earlier on Friday, Cannon paused deadlines in a controversial order that special counsel Jack Smith had condemned as a “clear error” in the ex-president's classified document case, according to court records and reports. Earlier this week, Cannon ordered Smith to deliver to her by Friday proposals for unredacted FBI interview witness reports that could appear on the public docket.

Smith warned about threats to people involved in the case, causing the earlier pause. But later on Friday, Cannon said the information still must be delivered to Trump and other defendants in the case, including Walt Nauta, according to the court docket.

I think she just overplayed her hand. Smith has already said that she has made a clear error and asked her to reconsider. When she refuses to change her mind, he will appeal this ruling and win and she will be reprimanded yet again. The appeals court can decide, if they feel the error is egregious enough, to replace her. I hope Smith is just giving her enough rope to hang herself.

So she is just wasting everyone’s time essentially?

That's the goal. Keep it unresolved until after the election. Then Trump's new AG will kill it, is their hope. Trump then gives Cannon a pat on the head and a cookie.

Stop! No! Clarence Thomas and Alito are enough!

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

They will not stop while anyone outside their federalist tribe can still breath free.

Always has been

I sure hope you’re right but I have little faith ANY of these people will ever face consequences.

[-] kescusay@lemmy.world 134 points 10 months ago

Cannon is so obviously corrupt it's unreal.

It is many things: disgusting, disturbing, repulsive, sickening, loathsome, sickening, nauseous, revolting, repugnant, abhorrent, detestable...etc. etc.

Hey remember when a judge doing something shady would get the state bars and other judges involved?

I'm only in my 30s but I remember.

I also remember a time when something as simple as a lie will lead to impeachment.

Now we have president's who start lying before they even hit the campaign trail, lie while being elected NOT by the people, lie while in office and literally do federal crimes in the process, lie with more federal crimes after you lose an election, lie with more federal crimes including treason before the group tells you you lost, lie after you leave, and do tons more crimes

And it takes FOUR FUCKING YEARS JUST FOR PEOPLE WHO EVEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

And what even more insane is that nobody seems to care. Sure they post all angrily about it but ultimately do nothing.

Unions work in jobs, unions will also be quite effective at ousting fascists. You just have to find the right union that won't get taken out by the Alphabet Boyz. Unfortunately history shows that any time progressives gather and arm, the government trips over itself to criminalize everything and throw them in prison. Sure doesn't seem like it happens to as many racist, sexist, homo/transphobic, fascist extremists who form their own groups. Guess the cops don't like arresting their own people.

But if you're black and sell a dime bag of weed...

[-] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 46 points 10 months ago

Or black and sleeping in your own home.

Yeah you know that stereotype of the white guy driving through certain areas so the black friends can get through without being stopped? Yeah I was the white friend who had to switch with the driver.

And still, it didn't always work. I even had one time where the sherif of a county in Ohio actually fucking demanded the driver licenses of the all three of the black people in the car. Completely ignoring the other white people, by the way. Couldn't have possibly made it more obvious what he was doing.

Being as white as I am (and young as I was) , I felt perfectly fine arguing with him about that because we don't live in nazi Germany or fascist "stop and frisk" places, he has no probable cause to even stop us let alone demand the papers of the passengers. But if he likes, I will happily get my family lawyer (lolololol way too poor for that) on the phone, what department should he send his phone bill to?

And we were "allowed" to leave, and when the pig told me "be careful next time" I snapped up (no salute, thank you) and said "jawol, mein fuhrer" and put it in drive.

That was my first first-hand experience with the massive systemic racism in law enforcement. Sure I had heard all about it, and seen it's effect, knew people who were affected, and completely believed it happens all the time, but I had never been witness to it right in front of me.

Yeah, my hometown was pretty white growing up...

I had an excellent opportunity to teach my daughter about white privilege the other day. I go buy weed at a legal dispensary in Illinois and bring it back to where I live in Indiana. My daughter asked me if I was scared of getting caught and I explained to her that if you're white, drive a relatively recent car and drive sensibly, a cop probably isn't going to pull you over, and all three apply to me. But, I also told her, if you're black, the other two factors don't even matter. She was already relatively aware of that idea since she's 13, but it was a great way to explain it with a real-life example.

[-] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 10 points 10 months ago

One of my coworkers is Indian-American and would often travel for work. He said that every time he went to this one place in Oklahoma he would get pulled over.

It was honestly shocking how many times he would come back from those trips and be like, “Yup. Happened again.”

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Old white guy here. I got stories as well, very much like yours. Hell, I've been discriminated against because my middle name is "black". Yeah, had to change that on my resume, offers poured in.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world -1 points 10 months ago

No, when did that happen?

[-] grue@lemmy.world 84 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Judge Cannon is trying to get witnesses killed so the case will collapse.

[-] fine_sandy_bottom@discuss.tchncs.de 20 points 10 months ago

If there weren't lives at stake I'd say it will be interesting to see whether names are leaked

[-] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 59 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

At this point Cannon is probably aware she's being too blatant in ignoring the law to defend Trump. She probably knows it will be reversed on appeal. But it's a win-win for her - turn over the witness information is a win for Trump, or delay is a win for Trump. Being reversed later doesn't have any negative effect for her or Trump.

It's just a fealty test for her, maybe resulting in a promotion to the Court of Appeals if Trump is elected. If not, she'll still sit in this judgeship until she dies or retires.

It's moments like this that really drive home that we probably will spend the rest of our lives either undoing the damage done by the 2016 election and the four years that followed, or living under fascism.

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

The rest of our lives? The damage Reagan did is still here. This isn't being undone.

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Being reversed later doesn't have any negative effect for her or Trump

Having most of your rulings overturned isn't exactly helpful if you want to be appointed to a higher court, but at this point her career path is pretty much shot anyway.

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago

If her "side" wins, she'll get promoted. Loyalty is the No. 1 requirement.

I mean, if a narcissistic sociopath wants to give you a judgeship nomination, and your party controls the Senate and is a bunch of spineless toadies, it doesn't matter how much you have been overturned. Being overturned is a job qualification for people who want to destroy the existing rule of law.

[-] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 49 points 10 months ago

That's enough for Smith to request she's taken off the case

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

He can request it, but it has little chance of happening at this point

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago

He just needs to appeal the decision. The appeals court will overrule her, again, sanction her, again, and probably remove her from the case as it is apparent that she is not acting impartially.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 26 points 10 months ago

So basically she's giving Trump a license to kill.

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

[-] StinkyOnions@lemmy.world 25 points 10 months ago

He's obviously going to appeal she's overstepping.

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 25 points 10 months ago

11th Circuit has slapped her once, if they don’t act on this one (after Smith puts it before them, which he will), I don’t even know after that.

[-] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 23 points 10 months ago

It's a stall tactic. She gets to delay another two weeks while she prepares her rebuttal.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 7 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Her rebuttal (probably/paraphrased):

Clip from Iron Man 2 of an outtake reel with Howard Stark saying 'From all of us at Stark Industries, I'd like to show you....my ass"

[-] DarkGamer@kbin.social 12 points 10 months ago

Now Trump's shill judges are helping him with stochastic terrorism. The corruption of our justice system will reverberate through this country for generations.

[-] Jaderick@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

The fates of these witnesses should be tied to Cannon’s. If something happens to the witnesses she should receive the same.

[-] billwashere@lemmy.world -2 points 10 months ago

I abhor violence against women but this woman has an extremely punchable face.
